SMVDU organizing Science Internship Camp | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 26: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) is organizing a five day Department of Science and Technology, GOI sponsored "Innovation in Scientific Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE), Science Internship Camp in the university campus. This is the 4th such camp and the University organized three such camps since April 2010. INSPIRE Camp shall go on till 30th of December, 2011. The Camp took off with an Inaugural INSPIRE Expository Lecture by R. N. Gohil. Gohil who is a lecturer at National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and Indian Botanical Society in his lecture impressed upon over 300 young attendees of the camp to work hard and be focused in order to achieve excellence in life. He said that there is dearth of students who opt for pure sciences as a career option. He stressed the students to be inquisitive and to be filled with a sense of inquiry as that is what would lead them to be great scientists of future. He said that there is need for the second green revolution as the per-capita food production in the country is going down although the overall food production is showing an increasing trend. His lecture was followed by a lecture by K. R. Manjunath, Scientist SF from Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmadabad. Manjunath spoke about the applications of remote sensing and satellite technology in various domains of social good. He extensively dealt with all the application areas being perused by ISRO. SMVDU has already organized there camps in past in April, 2010, June, 2010 and the third Camp in May, 2011. These camps were highly successful and were appreciated by all. Over 50 eminent Scientists and Academicians from all over the country mentored over 1300 young students from our state. 15 to 20 mentors are expected to join the fourth camp as mentors. Some of the mentors who are going to speak during the camp include Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor University of Kashmir, R.N.K. Bamezai, Vice Chancellor SMVD University, Devesh K. Sinha, University of Delhi, A Mukhopadhyay, DST, GOI, K. Karmeshu, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Delhi, Ram Pal Tandon, University of Delhi, R.K. Wanchoo, Punjab University, Chandigarh, K. S. Parikh, Deputy Director, SNAA, Space Applications Centre, ISRO, A. S. Kiran Kumar, Associate Director, Space Applications Centre, ISRO. Besides there a few more mentors are expected to join the camp. Earlier during the inaugural session of the camp the S. K. Wanchoo, Director, SICD, SMVDU and Coordinator of the INSPIRE Camps expressed his satisfaction over the excellent attendance of student participants from all over the state. He said that over 120 girls and 180 boys have joined the camp. He said that many activities like science stage shows, screening of documentaries, interactive Q&A sessions, Lab tours apart from the regular lectures shall form a part of the camp and he asked the students to make full use of the opportunity provided to them by Department of Science and Technology, GOI and the University.
