APDP president reacts sharply, calls Imroz traitor
1/13/2007 11:25:50 PM
Srinagar | Jan 13
Cautioning that people who claim to have constituted a new association for representing parents of persons disappeared over the past seventeen years were minting money out of other's ordeal, Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) President, Parveena Ahangar, today said that the constitution of the association explicitly lays down that a person who is not a victim of forced disappearance of a kin can not be a member of the APDP.
Ahangar, however, resolved to keep working for tracing out the whereabouts of those disappeared during the years of turmoil and promised that the alleged misappropriation of funds by the likes of Parvez Imroz of Coalition of Civil Society, who was ousted by the APDP president some days back, shall end.
Speaking at a crowded news conference in Srinagar today, Ahnager claimed that her group was the real representative of the parents of disappeared persons while lashing out at Parvez Imroz group. Imroz, after being ousted by the APDP president, had two days back framed a new executive body claiming that his group represented the affected families.
"The APDP has a well adopted constitution and it is explicit in its terms that a person whose dear one has not gone missing during the turmoil cannot qualify for its membership. The people who claim to be representatives of victims under the banner of APDP have not been affected and in such a way any committee formed by them is illegal, un-warranted and goes against the constitution of APDP," said Parveena.
Parveena further added that the Association was a group of victims who would fight for their rights on their own while resolving to lead the organization in future days. Reminding the government of her resolve, the APDP president stated that she and her organization will be satisfied by nothing short of the exact whereabouts of their near and dear ones.
"Since its formation in 1994, I have been working and will continue till my last breath to work for the affected families. I have myself gone to far off places and brought these affected families together. APDP is purely the organization of victims of disappearances and has nothing to do with any politics," she said.
Charging the ousted patron, Parvez Imroz and his associates of mismanagement, the APDP president said that the same would end. She further alleged that Imroz and others wanted to make a profit out of the sufferings of the victims of disappearances, who have been fighting relentlessly for justice for many years now.
"In 2000, I went to Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD) on their invitation but last month I was sidelined and Pervez Imroz went there without informing any of us. I came to know that General Secretary of AFAD wanted to meet me but they mislead him by claiming that Parveena no longer works with the organisation," she said.
