Too many new contenders for ministerial berths | Much awaited cabinet reshuffle put on hold? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 27: Authoritative sources Tuesday told Early Times that the much awaited cabinet reshuffle in the State expected after 5th January next year could be either deferred or carried out merely as a cosmetic exercise. This has dampened the spirits of many probables who have been engaged in hectic lobbying to figure as the new ministerial faces in the State cabinet. "The issue of cabinet reshuffle is rather ticklish. There are three berths of cabinet ministers which could be filled by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah through a reshuffle. While the NC and the Congress have left one ministerial berth vacant when the present coalition government took office in 2009, a third cabinet slot was left vacant after the resignation of GM Saroori. This means the State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah can induct three new faces into the cabinet one from the NC and two from the Congress. Ordinarily, one new face could be nominated by the NC and two by the Congress high command in consultation with its State unit. The problem is that while two contenders are already engaged in hectic lobbying from within the NC including Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan and Mir Saifullah, three more persons including Omar's estranged uncle, Dr. Mustafa Kamal, NC MLC's Sheikh Ghulam Rasool and Devender Singh Rana have also thrown the hat into the ring for the ministerial berth." The sources also confirmed that with five contenders for just one ministerial berth that the NC can fill up according to the coalition understanding, the choice has literally become very difficult for the Chief Minister. "He would rather like the present status quo on the issue to continue than annoy four contenders by selecting one among them. Again, for the Congress the re-induction of Saroori as proposed by Ghulam Nabi Azad is meeting serious resistance from within the Congress with other senior leaders raising their hands for the ministerial berths. This in nutshell means either the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would postpone the cabinet reshuffle all together or at the best shuffle portfolios within the existing ministers without bringing in any new faces. Thus nothing earthshaking would happen even if the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah goes for portfolio reshuffle within his existing team. Induction of new faces has most probably been put on hold," sources told Early Times. |
