Institutional veil
Mousumi Kalita Sachdeva12/27/2011 11:57:53 PM
Craze to learn new things and to be a part of the class called 'smart' is a common sign in today's generation. Can anyone guess what these new things comprise? Of course none can deny the fact that the craze today is after the popular 'English'. And this English can be specifically narrowed down to what we call 'Spoken English'. Along with this, some other new terms have caught the attention in the form of new courses. Here is my little effort to delve deep into the mater.
Being involved in the field of literature as well as journalism, I generally tend to study the temperament and environment of each and every city I am posted to. And the common scene in most of the small cities is the same. Also being a part of English training, I tried to hunt the various well known English Institutions in different places and after being found the actual scene behind was a heart breaking hit to me. No doubt the craze to learn English both by the students as well as the working people is still very vivacious. Even the housewives today desire to have an attire of English to become the so called 'perfect ladies' in a society and tailoring the small kids to interact in English right from their birth is regarded as the best upbringing at home. Surely, this temperament has been proved to be an advantage to a particular class of people which we may simply term 'business'. As a result of this today we see more than three English speaking Institutions even in a narrow lane. My question is to the general public, "have you ever tried to test and taste the quality of training in the institution you join or are you swayed away by the counsellor's strong speech?" but it is much cry and little wool to my observation. Even the most popular institution providing training in Spoken English hold counsellors speaking Hindi and if English, it is rather 'Hinglish' than English. And adding more disappointment to it are the trainers who speak grammatically incorrect with wrong pronunciation but giving lessons of Spoken English. But the craze to know English is so high in the people that they accept whatever comes on their way. They get mesmerized by the loud and stylish accent of the trainers without judging if the accents used really exist.
Having met some youngsters attending such coaching classes provided me few more answers. A young student doing BE one day approached me to discuss his problem and conveyed that since seven months he has been undergoing English classes and still the result was unsuccessful. I could just ask him how he dared to afford more than three months to learn a language and when he would look forward for his career. His simple answer was "they (the institution) provide life time course". It only seemed humour added to tension and reminded me of mobile connections providing life time validity. Then I realized why these simple but enthusiastic people get carried away by market terms and jump into this market. Moreover, the craze to learn new things does not end with the language called English but there are so called courses like Personality Development (PD) which actually is nothing but Soft Skills. And to enlighten you more let me unveil the actuality behind this mask called PD. The so called PD classes are nothing different than the spoken English. The trainers here teach English and conduct some group discussion classes. Having interviewed a student regarding the presentation techniques in the PD classes, showed his blank face as if ignorant of the term called presentation skills. A PD class should train the students regarding the preparation and presentation of seminars and workshops. Their craze should be fulfilled with authentic new things like business, dining and correct communicating etiquettes apart from Group Discussion and interviewing skills in the course called PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT.
Similarly, another new craze among the youngsters today is the BPO i.e. Call centre jobs. Then how can the institutions remain silent without providing the training of call centre programs. And more pathetic is to see the students who do not know the actual definition and the working style of a call centre but regularly attending call centre classes. Being asked to few such students, my eyes were wide opened to know that they are learning English grammar and specifically tenses for more than a month in the class. There are no classes of phonetics or pronunciation, audio and video skills. Even the most important lessons like professional selling and telephonic etiquettes are missing. My query is how anyone could put a candidate into a call centre training program if he/she is incapable of speaking English. Its only business tactics of snatching huge amount from simple candidates who aspire to join a call centre and earn early in life.
We all know the world can't be all serene. But that doesn't mean our city is without good education centres. The only requirement is the effort of the common people to find out the best amongst many. Let's disclose the institutional veil and build a pragmatic approach to fulfil our craze to be in the class so called "smart".
