Police eat a humble pie as Kashmir stays calm
Peaceful 2011

Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 29: In two days, 2011 shall end. It was relatively calm the fears of the establishment to the contrary notwithstanding. The police expected a repeat of 2009 agitation but Kashmir remained peaceful. A few question arises. How do they know that Kashmir would witness yet another agitation this year? Did police expect an agitation on the basis of intelligence reports? And, if intelligence reports have proved false, can the administration trust the sleuths who cook stories to present a gory picture of Kashmir for petty reasons?
Surprisingly the separatists seemed least bothered about the agitation that the government expected in summer. The Mirwaiz Hurriyat rejected such rumours as machinations of anti-social elements. Similarly the Geelani Hurriyat rejected the rumors of another agitation this year as ridiculous. Geelani said the rumor was spread by unscrupulous elements.
However, both the Hurriyat's expressed serious concern over `indiscriminate arrests' across Kashmir. Mirwaiz equalled such arrests as genocide. Geelani made clear that the people will remain calm if `police behave properly'. He said if police resort to killings, then the people will have no option but to come out on the streets.
Ordinary activists of both the factions spoke the same language. "Any mistake by the police will prove disastrous. If the present trend (arrests) continues then people may not wait for June", warned a Hurriyat activist.
The separatists blamed the police for triggering the agitation. Pertinently the first phase of the agitation started on January 31 when Wamiq Farooq, a student of 11th standard got killed in police action. This was followed by another killing on February 5 near Nishat. This time the victim was Zahid Farooq. Things cooled down a bit but the suppressed volcano made its way when Tufail Matoo was killed in June. A human rights defender while commenting on the agitation said: "How can the police expect the people to remain silent when killings are going on? The people cannot be indifferent to such gory incidents. When a person gets killed, his relatives, friends and neighbours will definitely register protest", he said.
Police heeded Geelani's warning this year. Instead of bullets water cannons and a new breed of smoke shells were used. Nobody got killed and people stayed indoors.
