JKEDI for coordinating development of handicraft clusters | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, December 30: State Government has appointed Jammu & Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) as the Nodal Agency for coordinating the development of Handicraft clusters in the State.
Under the project, development of 10 handicraft clusters in Srinagar has been identified for immediate interventions. The cluster based approach would be applied for crafts development especially in areas of skill development, setting up of common facility centers and market linkages.
The project aims at effective integration of scattered artisans and helping them to build and ensure modernization cum development of increased productivity and higher unit value realization.
The State is endowed with rich heritage of handicrafts which provide livelihood to large number of people; some crafts like Paper-machine, Sozni, Wood Carving, Carpets, Shawls, etc. are practiced in geographical concentrations in various parts of Srinagar. Such clusters, if developed in an integrated manner coupled with tourism; have the potential to improve market access of artisans and impact the overall economy of the City/State reads an official handout.
For effective implementation of the project, technical proposals from competent authorities/ firms to assist in holistic development of the identified clusters in Srinagar have already been advertised by the Institute.
In the first phase, the Institute would carry a diagnostic study in the already identified 10 clusters to identify the gaps; this would be followed by sensitization and capacity building of cluster stakeholders to ensure their participation in the identified interventions.
