| JKHA’s inactiveness proving fatal for the game | | >>Official expresses inability to provide figures on performance of the state hockey team | | VIKAS SHARMA JAMMU: The J&K Hockey Association, state’s premier hockey association is in a pathetic state of affairs owing to its inactiveness which is also proving fatal for the state team as their abysmal performance continues in various tournaments for quite a long time now thereby raising questions over the credibility about the existence of the association. Not only this, the association has also failed to maintain the records in a proper manner regarding the details of the performance of the state hockey team in various championships. This was eminent when this “Early Times” scribe contacted the association for collecting the details regarding the performance of the state hockey team in different hockey championships. One of the officials of the association responsible for keeping the records expressed his inability to show the details by saying that he is busy and it is also a time consuming affair. This points out towards the fact that the association which is supposed to work for the upliftment of the standard of the game in the state is itself struggling for survival owing to the irresponsible attitude of its officials. There is a severe drought in term of medals as far as the performance of the state team is concerned with not too many medals in their kitty despite playing in all major tournaments. Interestingly, the hockey players practicing regularly in the stadium don’t even know about the actual length of the hockey stick which really exposes the ill functioning of the association that even has the coaches appointed to train the players. However, it is a pity that they (players) don’t know the basics of the game. But the players too had their limitations as they don’t get regular practice sessions owing to unavailability of a proper hockey ground. One of the players during practice session at M.A. Stadium speaking to the “Early Times” said “How can you expect us to produce good results? It is very hard for us to concentrate on our game with only one ground to practice at the main stadium. Players from other disciplines also have the same ground to practice resulting in the inadequate practice session. The selection procedure adopted by the association is also not transparent as the players who don’t know the ‘ABC’ of the game are selected for the championship and players like us who are coming regularly at the stadium receive just disappointment.” Jagjit Singh President J&K Hockey Association when contacted said, “ No doubt, there has been a steep decline in the performance of the state hockey team which is really a threatening sign for the survival of the hockey in the state unless and until something extraordinary would be done very soon. It is really sad that the state has not able to produce promising hockey players who can prove their mettle with their representation in the national hockey team.”
