30 boats are being added to strengthen river police patrolling | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, January 1Apart from upgrading weapon, ammunition, transport and communication system for enabling the police to tackle any law and order problem the state Government has decided to strengthen police patrolling in the river and lake belts in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources in the police disclosed that for improving the mobility of police parties entrusted with the task of monitoring the movement of militants and other subversive elements on and around the river Jehlum, Dal and Nigin lakes in Kashmir and Mansar lake in Jammu the department has decided to press into service 30 "Shikaras"(boats). According to these sources, several lakhs of rupees were being earmarked for strengthening the police patrolling in the river and lake belts. They said river and lake patrolling had become necessary in view of the past experience when the police teams were responsible for ensuring survival of groups of tourists whose boats were caught in a flash storms on the Dal lake. The police patrolling on the Dal and the Nigin lakes was also important because hawkers and others were not able to fleece tourists by overcharging while selling handicraft items, fruit and other goods. Sources said that whenever some militants tried to escape police crackdown they would normally flee to the lake and water bodies and here the role of policing in and around the water bodies was vital so that those subversive elements who had managed to give a slip to the security forces, during the crackdown or search operations, were accounted for by the police on patrol. In this context the police is revamping and upgrading its boat fleet. Report s said that about half a dozen police shikaras have outlived their utility and besides replacing them 30 new boats are being added to strengthen the boat fleet.
