23rd Traffic Safety Week commence today
2 high tech training institutions to be set up in the State: Akhoon

JAMMU, JANUARY 01: Minister for Transport and CA&PD, Qamar Ali Akhon has said that the Government is contemplating to set up two high tech training institutions in Kashmir and Jammu divisions besides introducing a comprehensive Transport Policy to improve traffic management system in the State. He said divisional commissioners of both the divisions have been asked to identify land so that work on the project is started early.
The Minister was addressing at a function organized in connection with celebration of 23rdRoad Safety Week-2012 here today. This year’s theme was “Accidents bring tears; safety brings cheer”.
Minister of State for Transport and CA&PD, Shabir Ahmad Khan, Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khuda, Commissioner Secretary Transport, Pradip kumar Gupta, IG, Traffic, H.K.Lohia, Transport Commissioner, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo, MD, SRTC, Tandan, Director State Motor Garages, Mr G.N.Sofi besides senior officers of Traffic and Motor Vehicles Departments were present on the occasion.
Emphasizing on obeying traffic rules, Akhoon said that negligence of drivers and commuter results lost of precious human lives and damage to the property. He said “This could be checked if traffic rules are followed strictly both by drivers and commuters” said the Minister, adding that need of the hour is to understand the responsibilities by every one of our society in this direction.
The Minister said that launching of a massive awareness campaign is required to sensitize people about the traffic rules and asked authorities to organize such programmes at district level by involving NGOs and educational institutions so that maximum people are made aware about the benefits of obeying traffic rules and drawback in their violation. He said, as per the survey, annually over one lakh persons lost their lives in traffic accidents in the country.
Mr Qamar said though there are sufficient provisions of laws to deal with traffic violators, yet the laws have been made more stringent, he added.
Earlier, Mr Pradip Gupta gave the detailed account of the initiatives the department has taken to improve further the transport and traffic management system in the State. He said the department has earned Rs. 112 crore during last financial year while department disbursed Rs. Rs. 45 lakh among 362 victims.
Mr Gupta said, apart from setting of trauma hospitals on national highways the need is to establish adequate number of training institutions across the State. He said efforts are on to introduce Road Accident Data Management System in the State on the pattern of Tamil Nadu to evaluate the cause of accident besides taking remedial measures. He said motor vehicles rules have been amended to make them more effective and stringent.
Kuldeep Khoda, Lohia and Mr, Kakroo also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of the event. They emphasized to follow strictly the traffic rules to ensure safety of human life and property besides launching massive public awareness campaign in the State.
