Kishtwar, Jan 1: Before his death, Sher-e-Kashmir found Dr Farooq incapable of taking his legacy forward. He saw a better alternative in Late Ghulam Muhammad Shah. This was stated by Sher-e-Kashmir's elder daughter and chief of Awami National Conference, Khalida Shah in an exclusive interview with Early Times.
"When my father fell ill, he called my late husband and urged him to take over the reins of National Conference. However, my husband refused to take over the party during the life time of Sher-e-Kashmir", she said.
She said that when National Conference was fighting for its survival after Sher-e-Kashmir's arrest, Farooq was in London enjoying life. "Nobody in the state knew Farooq till his first appearance in public during the restoration of Holy Relic Movement in 1964", she said.
"Immediately after returning from London, Farooq annoyed senior party workers. Sher-e-Kashmir did not like it and advised him to behave properly and consult party workers for a successful political career. He was further told to pursue the party agenda in letter and spirit", Khalida said.
According to Khalida, Sher-e-Kashmir founded Muslim Conference in the year 1932 which was later converted to National Conference in the year 1938 to allow people from all communities to fight against the autocratic rule of Maharaja.
She said that her late father always took the people of the state along. "My father succeeded in his mission when people like Kashyap Bandhu, Jai Lal Kelim, Pandit Sudhama Sidha, Prem Nath Bazaz and Sardar Budh Singh joined him", she said.
Khalida revealed that Sher-e-Kashmir wanted Ghulam Muhammad Shah to succeed him. "However, Farooq was administered oath after his death. My husband fully supported Farooq", she said.
Khalida accused Farooq of humiliating party leaders and workers. "He did what he has been doing to Mustafa Kamal today", Khalida said.
Justifying the 1984 coup, Khalida said it was a result of vertical division in the National Conference. "It happened when may a party worker expressed dissatisfaction over Farooq's functioning. The dissident group finally shifted loyalty towards Shah", she said.
She said that her father Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah will be remembered for his honesty, Integrity and love for his people, which her brother Dr Farooq Abdullah lacks. (To be continued)
