Div Com issues instructions for snow preparedness

Srinagar, Jan 2: In view of an approaching western disturbance light to moderate snowfall is expected between 4th to 7th January 2012 in The Valley. The Officiating Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Abdul Majeed Mir, today directed all Deputy Commissioners, Commissioner SMC, Director CAPD, Tourism, Urban Local Bodies, Chief Engineers of Beacon, R&B, PHE, Electric Maintenace, Mechanical Engineering to ensure that necessary measures are taken to ensure minimum disruption of services and activatev snow control rooms.
It is pertinent to mention that Asgar Hassan Samoon is presently on training at IIM, Bangalore upto 6thJan 2012.
A central snow control room has been activated at Srinagar and the contact numbers are 0194-2497458.
The Mechanical Engineering Deptt will deploy 93 snow clearance machines in case of snowfall.
The valley has been divided into three zones with Srinagar, Bugdgam and Ganderbal in Zone -1 having 36 machines and Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam in Zone 2 with 24 machines while Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora including Gurez and Gulmarg in Zone 3 with 33 machines.
Meanwhile, instructions were also given that in case of snowfall only such vehicles will be allowed between Tangmarg & Gulmarg which either have (4x4) facility or have anti-skid chains fitted on the tyres.
This measure has been taken to avoid any mishap due to skidding of vehicles, which can cause accidents. Police and traffic authorities have been directed to enforce the order, as and when there is snowfall.
Administration has appealed public not to insist on taking their non-4x4 vehicles beyond Tangmarg in case of snowfall as the road gets slippery and can result in accidents.
Instructions have also been given to RTO Kashmir to ensure availability of adequate taxis fitted with anti-skid chains or (4x4) at Tangmarg for the facility of the locals and tourists visiting Gulmarg.
