Will 2012 bring cheers to Jammu?
Time to Retrospect
1/3/2012 12:03:51 AM
Neha
Jammu, Jan 2: 2011 is over. The year witnessed the Jammu-based established political leadership not doing anything whatsoever for the constituencies it represented in the assembly and the parliament. On the contrary, the year saw it involved in petty politicking, thus directly and indirectly helping the ruling NC in further jeopardizing the legitimate interests of the people of Jammu province. The Jammu-based Congress leadership allowed the NC to ride roughshod and harm and humiliate Jammu to the extent possible. A reference here to just one example in this regard would be enough to draw a right conclusion as far as the role of the Congress was concerned. I am referring to the issuance of an order by the Congress-controlled revenue department under which the Dogras were entitled to obtain Dogra certificate for joining the central paramilitary forces and the circumstances under which it was withdrawn. It was withdrawn under pressure from the Valley-based NC, the PDP and the Kashmiri separatists of all hues.
The so-called ultra-nationalist and pro-Jammu BJP also didn't do anything to get the difficulties of the people of Jammu province mitigated. On the contrary, the majority of its legislators in the assembly hobnobbed with the NC and the Congress, ensured the victory of the NC and Congress candidates seeking election to the legislative council and subverted the people's mandate. They cross-voted and brought same to the party and the people who had elected them. There was hardly any occasion in 2011 when any of the BJP leaders or legislators indicated his desire to protect and advance further the interests of the people of Jammu province. It would be no exaggeration to say that the Jammu-based BJP leadership remained dormant or devoid of any political activity throughout the year.
The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), which had in the first week of 2011 promised to work for the reorganization of the state and to get a separate chief minister and separate assembly for Jammu province, also very badly let down the people. It, like the BJP, didn't do anything worthwhile to fulfill the solemn commitment it had made. It, like the BJP, indulged in the politics of statements and press conferences, a technique that didn't have any kind of impact on the ruling NC. The fact is that the NC, like the BJP and the Congress, frittered away the opportunity and became a laughing stock.
As for the Jammu-based NC and the PDP leadership, less said the better. As expected, it simply worked in the Jammu province as the representative of its Kashmiri masters. In other words, it represented Kashmir in Jammu province and became an instrument through which the Kashmir-based NC and PDP leadership sought to implement their respective agendas and weaken the cause of Jammu province.
It's no wonder then that the entire Jammu-based leadership today stands discredited. Hence, it is time for the Jammu-based political parties working in and outside the government to retrospect and come out with some definite Jammu-centric programme so that 2011 is not repeated. A radical change in their attitude has become all the more imperative considering the fact that the attitude of the general public towards the political class has undergone a tremendous change. The general public now believes that they are the people of India and that those who enter the legislative assemblies and the parliament are simply their representatives, not their masters, whose duty it is to conduct as per their (people's) wishes.
Hence, the established political leadership in Jammu must see the wring on the wall and do something that brings cheers to the otherwise abandoned people of Jammu province. Why should it allow the Kashmiri leadership to do what it has been consistently doing since 1947 to destroy Jammu socially, economically, culturally and politically? It is not accountable to Kashmir and Kashmiri leadership; it is accountable to Jammu and the people of Jammu province and the country as a whole.
