Security beefed up ahead of Republic Day: IGP

Jammu, Jan 3 : Jammu Inspector General of Police Dilbagh Singh today said security has been beefed up along the Indo-Pakistan border and in the winter capital of the state ahead of Republic Day celebrations on January 26.

‘’Republic Day is an important occasion and we are geared up to celebrate it with zeal amid tight security arrangements,’’ Singh told reporters at the sidelines of a function here this afternoon.

The IGP said security has been intensified within the city and in peripheries with additional deployment and raised check points at all major locations.

‘’Though the anti-nationals made number of infiltration attempts in 2011 from across the line to sneak into our territory but all were successfully foiled,’’ he said.

The top cop said security arrangements are being reviewed time to time with other security agencies adding, ‘’search control system operations are made operational and all districts police heads have been directed to maintain vigil and strengthen the security cover ahead of the Republic Day.’’ Ahead of the Assembly elections in neighbouring Punjab, the IGP said, "Security has been raised along J and K-Punjab border to keep check on smuggling of drugs and narcotics during polls.’’ Singh said as per Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directions, in view of rising incident of smuggling of drugs from the neighbouring state into Jammu and Kashmir during elections, surveillance has been increased and tight vigil is being maintained.
