1/3/2012 10:41:18 PM
early times report
Srinagar, Jan 3: The All Party Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) today alleged that Sikh affairs, including religious functions, were being "hijacked" by politicians in Jammu and Kashmir.

APSCC chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said leaders of different political parties should keep away from the religious affairs of Sikhs in the state.

Once again top politicians, representing different political parties hijacked the Sikh religious function organised in connection with Guru Gobind Singh Ji birthday Gurpurab at Chand Kour Samadh at Jammu recently, he alleged in a statement here.

He said even Shabid Kirtan was stopped midway to provide a stage to these politicians who have never raised their voice in favour of the community, demanding justice since Independence.

More than a dozen high-profile government officials and politicians spoke on the occasion including Congress leaders Raman Bhalla, Tara Chand, Mangat Ram Sharma, Sham Lal, R S Chibb, NC leaders Abdul Gani Malik, Harbans Singh and, PDP leader Rangeel Singh.

Besides them, many bureaucrats including DG Kuldeep Khoda were also seen on the stage, he said.

He said Sikhs all over the state have objected to the undue importance given to politicians and bureaucrats.

"Sikhs appeal to other communities not to allow misuse of their religious functions by these politicians," he added.

Raina said these leaders have never spoken a word about the welfare of the community, suffering since 1947.

The community had been ignored by the successive state and central governments, he alleged.

He demanded that an inquiry be held so that those responsible for ignoring the rights of community since Independence be brought to book.

Raina said Sikhs living in the state have been demanding minority status, employment package on a par with other migrants, directions to revene officials to issue state subject certificates, compensation for horticulture and agriculture losses suffered during the past more than two decades of turmoil in the valley, introduction of Punjabi language in Kashmir university and filling Punjabi teacher posts in schools and colleges.
