Dogri losing its sheen in Dogra cradle
Pankhuri Aggarwal1/3/2012 10:44:31 PM
Language is a symbol or a mode through which one
has the ability to exchange his ideas and views or
communicate with others. Jammu, the city of temples is a lovely place dwelling with wonderful people and their local language Dogri, a very sweet and a colourful language. Dogri is the mother tongue of our state but with the recent years this beautiful and mind powering language has lost its value not only with in today's generation but it is endangered with the coming generation as well. Dogri has actually originated from the Devanagari scripts in India. Taking to numerous people, Poonam Kapoor, a school teacher said, "Though Dogri language is the mother tongue of Dogras residing in our state but still maximum students are not aware of it. Like Urdu and Sanskrit it has been added in the academic subjects, the same way Dogri should also be added so that at least children become aware of this language too". Anamika Gangotra, a student said, "My mother speaks Dogri but I don't even know its alphabets. My mother always forces me to speak this language, but really it seems funky to me as I try to speak because I do not pronounce the words properly but I respect the language to the core of my heart". Divan Gupta, a businessman said, "I love Jammu my hometown. When ever I go out on some of my business tours I always try and communicate with people in Dogri language so that even other person becomes aware about the language and in addition it actually popularizes my language as well". Amit Dubey, a retired officer said, "The language has lost some of its significance. I do not see my grandchildren speaking this language but I try and communicate with them in Dogri only so that they actually know something about this language and also make them understand about the depth of the language as well. Through this they will not only learn the Dogri language but will also pass it on to the future generation". Preeti Aggarwal, a professor said, "At college or school level we should try and inculcate the habit of learning Dogri language by organizing competitions and generating awareness programs in schools and colleges and this will not only help them in there learning process but will also help them in their day to day activities as well". She further added, "Dogri language being a mother tongue is the true vehicle of the mother wit. It can and will become another medium of exchange of thoughts and feelings in the coming years". "Dogri poems, television programmes and various radio shows are the basic medium of through which awareness can be done about this beautiful language, the mother tongue of Jammu", said another professor, Neelam Mohan. The question is to respect all languages whether it may be Dogri, Punjabi or any other language. We should love our country, our state and do whatever required, taking the tradition values ahead and forwarding it to the future generation.
