CSC on Power finalises report | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 3: The Cabinet Sub Committee on Power today finalised its report, which is likely to be submitted to the cabinet for discussion within next few days. The Cabinet Sub Committee constituted by government to look into the niceties of relation with National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) and suggest measures to improve the power scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. The committee headed by Finance Minister Abdul Raheem Rather today met here at Jammu to discuss and finalise the draft report prepared by power development department under the guidance of Principal Secretary Basharat Ahmad Dar. Though the members of the committee refused to divulge into the details, sources however, said that the committee has recommended the return of Uri and Salal Hydro Power Projects from NHPC. Sources further maintained that a comprehensive report suggesting various other measures was finalised in today's meeting. The report was signed by all the members which include Finance Minister Abul Raheem Rather, Minister for PHE Taj Mohiuddin, Minister for Rural Development Ali Mohd. Sagar and Minister for Tourism Nuwang Rigzin Jora. When contacted, Minster for PHE Taj Mohiudin said that the report has been finalised and will be submitted to the Cabinet for discussion within next few days. Taj, however, refused to divulge into the details saying the document was a secret and could not be disclosed to media before it is submitted to the Cabinet. However, Taj when insisted to comment on whether the committee has recommended to buy back couple of Power Projects from NHPC, said that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is on record to have said publicly that the State government was contemplating to buy back Uri and Salal Hydro Power Projects from NHPC and the committee has made recommendations falling in line with C.M.'s commitment. When asked to comment on NHPC chairman's latest assertion that there was not any proposal before the NHPC or Government of India to hand over some of the power projects to State government, Taj said that the NHPC man has himself re-affirmed that there is no question of going back on commitment, so every commitment is to be honoured and we will certainly go by the decision of the cabinet. Taj however said that the Power Projects in Jammu and Kashmir are property of State and will remain so in future also. While making a point Taj said, "In worsening power scenario the State government has decided to operate Pampore Gas Turbine which simply means that you have to spend rupees one crore daily on electricity, generated from the gas turbine." Taj added that State government has to think in terms of long-term solution of the problem, which lies in the return of the two Power Projects to the State. |
