Congress-led UPA no more a boon for India
Nation In Trouble

JAMMU, Jan 3: India is passing through a very critical phase. The situation has worsened to the extent that the institution of Prime Minister has become totally defunct. His allies are against him and his policies and some of his own ministers are pulling in different directions. As for opposition, it is gunning for him and demanding his resignation, saying he has allowed the Congress party to murder democracy and he himself has undermined the parliamentary democracy by running away from voting on the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill. The Prime Minister is heading the most corrupt government, the opposition says. The Prime Minister's economic policies have made the life of common people a veritable hell on earth, the opposition says. The Prime Minister's foreign policy has lowered the position of the country in the eyes of the international community, the opposition says. The Prime Minister's nuclear policy has made India subservient to the United States and similar other countries, says the opposition. He is the weakest Prime Minister India has ever seen, says the opposition. The Prime Minister is representing the interests of the United States and the India Inc, the opposition says. The Prime Minister is shielding the corrupt and the looters, says the opposition. The Prime Minister is pursuing policies which are directly and indirectly helping those who have stashed black money in foreign banks, the opposition says. The Prime Minister has outlived his utility and it is time for him to quit, says the opposition. The magazines like Outlook and several news channels have expressed almost identical views. And, as for Prime Minister, he seldom speaks; he allows things to further deteriorate. What he did on December 29 in the Rajya Sabha is a classical example of his indifferent attitude towards parliamentary democracy.
It would be appropriate to quote what former Cabinet Secretary TSR Subramanian said only the other day about Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He said: "Perhaps it will be more appropriate to talk of ineffectiveness; he may himself want to go, given his helpless plight. Apart from referring to his personal honesty and purity, one will find it difficult to refer to any achievement of the government initiated by him. With all the serious problems of India, Manmohan found it necessary to focus on the nuclear deal, staking his all on it. Curiously, the only other policy issue where he showed interest was FDI in retail. Not for nothing have some wags described him as a 'political economic', with a huge 'P' and a tiny 'e'. In political circles though, he is a technocrat - which calls into question the wisdom of allowing a person without political acumen to lead a complex country. His successor will find it hard to restore the prestige of the office." It's a succinct comment, which explains everything.
It's not only the Prime Minister who is under severe attack from right and left. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is also under severe attack. The opposition has not allowed him to speak in the Parliament for months now. It wants him to vacate the North Block forthwith and face CBI inquiry. The trail court is examining if a charge-sheet could be filed against him in the 176,000 crore 2G spectrum scam. The Supreme Court is looking into the complaint filed by Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy. The case is the same. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithha is also after his head. The Madras High Court is examining an election petition against him and it could take any view. The AIADMK candidate, who was declared defeated by a narrow margin of say 100 votes in May 2009, has said in his election petition that P Chidambaram converted his defeat into victory misusing his official position and manipulating certain officials charged with the responsibility of conducting elections and declaring exact results without fear or favour. The fact is that P Chidambaram has not only lost his credibility but he has virtually become non-existent. He, like the Prime Minister, has stopped speaking to media persons, as he is just not in a position to face straight questions. It is the uncouth Kapil Sibal who comes to the rescue of the isolated Home Minister again and again, but with no result because Sibal is being looked down upon by many.
The story of Foreign Minister SM Krishna is no different. He has not only failed India while dealing with Pakistan, the United States, China, Russia, United Kingdom, Australia; and even Afghanistan, but he has also undermined the very foreign office. He is perhaps the only Foreign Minister whom no diplomat worth his/her name ever appreciates and he perhaps is the Only Foreign Minister who abused such senior bureaucrat as Union Home Secretary in order to please Pakistan to hide his own humiliate diplomatic defeat at the hands of his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi at Thimpu, Bhutan. Besides, he has been charge-sheeted in an illegal mining case by the Karnataka Lokayukta police.
So, the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Foreign Minister are all in the dock. The only two ministers who command respect from everyone are Finance Minister Pranab Mukharjee and Defence Minister AK Antony. But what can they do. They cannot do anything because the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Foreign Minister have caused an irreparable damage to the country and the polity. It would be an understatement if someone may says so that the UPA government owes its existence only to Pranabh Mukharjee. It was his critical interventions at critical junctures that saved the otherwise fast-crumbling UPA government.
As for the UPA chairperson and her son, who is thinking in terms of replacing Manmohan Singh, less said the better. None of them deserves any positive comment. In fact, it can be said without hesitation that the Prime Minister, the UPA chairperson, the Home Minister, the External Affairs Minister and the AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi have created an alarming situation in the country. Indeed, the nation is in trouble. The only silver-lining is that the people have become quite conscious about their responsibility towards the state and the nation. There is no doubt that the process of decline of Congress party would gain momentum after March 4, when the Election Commission of India would announce election results in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttrakhand, Goa and Manipur. The election process has already commenced which would be completed on March 3, when the people of Goa would go to polls.
