Countering Misinformation Campaign The First Task
Jammu's Plight

JAMMU, Jan 4: Kashmir is very fortunate in every respect. It has leadership which works in unison, ensures all-round development of Kashmir and on an unprecedented scale, fights for its people and behaves in a fashion that makes some important persons at the helm in New Delhi and outside as well as "opinion leaders" and "think-tanks" believe in what it preaches in order to extract as many concessions from New Delhi as possible. And, it has been happening since decades, particularly since 1931. It was in the 1920s that Sheikh Abdullah of Kashmir and his supporters unleashed a vilification campaign against the Dogras and the Dogra Maharaja with a view to "achieving freedom from Jammu".
It needs to be noted that the Britons, who had their interests in the strategic northern areas, had also contributed considerably to what the Sheikh tried to do to promote his agenda and destabilize the Dogra rule. Some other powers, including the Americans, also interfered in the state's internal affairs and sided with the likes of Sheikh Abdullah. Their objective was to promote their geo-political interests in the region at the cost of India.
The vilification campaign had its impact to the extent that an impression gained ground that the Dogra rule was "anti-Kashmir" and "anti-Muslim" and that the "Kashmiri Muslims had been treated worse than the brutes". So much so that certain powerful elements, including Jawaharlal Nehru, came forward to support the Sheikh Abdullah's struggle for independence from Jammu. And, ever since then, this sort of motivated campaign has been going on unabated. The only difference is that while Sheikh Abdullah before 1947 wanted Kashmir's independence from Jammu and the Dogras, the Kashmiri leadership has been demanding since 1947 separation of the entire state, including Jammu province, from India.
Those who mattered outside the state before 1947 were with the Sheikh. They supported his Kashmiri Muslim sub-nationalism much to the chagrin of the people of Jammu. Those who have been at the helm outside the state and in other establishments since 1947 continue to behave in the same fashion. The casualty is the poor people of Jammu province. There is none in Kashmir who is prepared to highlight the Jammu's woes. There is none in New Delhi who is prepared to take cognizance of the miserable plight of the people of Jammu province and take remedial measures taking into account the fact that problem in Jammu is both human and political.
As for the Jammu leadership, less said the better. It is not really dependable. What then is the option? If the suffering people of this province really wish to lead a dignified life as Indians, they have no other option but to counter the ongoing age-old misinformation campaign unleashed by the Kashmiri leadership and their supporters outside the Valley and make New Delhi aware of the true picture of facts. They can do so.
