Rajouri river gets polluted by garbage dumping | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Jan 5: Despite a ban imposed by District and Sessions Court, the open dumping of garbage by Municipal Committee Rajouri (MCR) is going on unabated which in the process is still polluting the waters of Rajouri river. Rajouri has always lacked proper garbage disposing mechanism as well as a eco-sustainable garbage dumping site. Rajouri town’s a garbage dumping site identified by Municipal Committee Rajouri (MCR) is located on the bank of Rajouri river between the area of Salani bridge and Tariq bridge and near the famous Doodhadari Ashram. Due to the dumping of the rubbish, the water, soil and air borne diseases spread rapidly in Rajouri and adjoining areas. From past many decades MCR is dumping garbage and waste of urban areas on this non-permitted land. Due to such a dumping in open area in ecologically unstable way, the environmental balance of Rajouri has got badly deteriorated. Some time back, a local NGO registered a case in court and appealed for ban on this open dumping, after which Distt and Session Court implemented complete ban on such dumping by MCR but still the practice is going on. About 2 month's back, Govt authorities identified a piece of land in Saranoo area for making Municipal garbage dumping site but locals openly opposed it, beaten Municipal Committee employees, hold protest and finally got a stay. Their step could also be justified because the land selected in Saranoo area for making garbage dumping site was located on the bank of river, near a natural water well and few metres away from tube-wells of PHE. Executive Officer of MCR Parvez Ahmed has recently said that a Govt project worth Rs 6.5 crore is underway for making an eco-sustainable garbage dumping site near Rajouri for resolving this problem. But God knows when its work will get started and when drastic pollution of Rajouri river will get stopped. "From past many years we are waiting for the time when Rajouri will get an eco-stable garbage site because this naturally beautiful area is getting polluted on large scale especially due to lacklustre approach of MCR", a local Om Parkash Nirojali said.
