Watch less tower in Lal Chowk mocks at Govt
1/6/2012 12:04:11 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 5: Srinagar, Omar Abdullah once said, is the face of Jammu Kashmir. Many people contest this. Anyways, if it is accepted for Omar's sake, Lal Chowk's importance must also be accepted. This historic chowk forms he face of Srinagar.
The Prime Minister of India addressed people from here in 1948. Sher-e-Kashmir recited the Persian verse Mun tou shudum tou mun shudi (I become you and you become me) to express his love for India. This is where Sheikh shocked the people after signing the accord in 1975. It is also witness to other historic events. However, it was ignored for unknown reasons.
The Omar government instead concentrated on Lal Chowk's Clock Tower. Pertinent to mention, the clock tower has no historical importance. It came up in early 80s and became politically important in 1992 when the then BJP president, Murli Manohar Joshi hoisted the tricolor on the tower. He started his yatra from a distant state in India and ended it at Lal Chowk.
The separatists tried their best to `conquer' the tower in 2008 and 2010 but every time the government subjected people to inconvenience by imposing curbs on their movement. The tower suffered some damage on Eid last year when Mirwaiz Umer Farooq led a procession from Eidgah and `conquered' the tower.
It was on that day that the Tower's cement fencing gave way. The government used tons of steel to make the tower durable. It looks beautiful but mocks at the authorities who forgot to give the Tower a watch. But in this neglected land who cares for time!
