. Would Omar continue with corrupt ministers? | | | Early Times Report Jammu Jan 6- UP Chief Minister Mayawati decides to give marching orders to four corrupt ministers. This has happened without any Lokpal intervention because the UP Chief Minister is keeping her ears close to the ground. Couldn’t the State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah set an example by making an example of some of the corrupt ministers in his cabinet? Couldn’t the Chief Minister, who starts his second three-year term today, at least send out a powerful signal that the laxities of the past would not be tolerated any more? It cannot be said that Omar Abdullah does not know who are the corrupt ministers in his cabinet. For if the Chief Minister embarking on his second three-year does not know even after the previous three years what the track record of his ministers has been, then that is a tragedy for both the people of the State and the government itself. Coalition compulsions cannot outweigh the moral responsibility of the Chief Minister to clean the Aegean Stables. For three long years the dirt has been kept under the carpet and the time has finally come that the corrupt must be shown the door. It is not possible for anybody to raise voice in favour of the corrupt if the axe really falls on them. Continuing with the corrupt ministers has cost the image of the Chief Minister heavily during the last three years. Now he has a clear opportunity to set things right. The first decision Omar Abdullah should take as he begins his second three-year term as the Chief Minister must be sending out a powerful message against corruption in the State. This can only be done logically if Omar Abdullah decides to weed out the corrupt from the top. Honesty and propriety for the government is a waterfall. If a peon is honest his honesty is not going to influence the honesty of the entire department as long as the minister heading the department continues to indulge in corrupt practices. There is irrefutable evidence of corruption available with the state vigilance organization against some of the ministers for their corrupt indulgences. Since the state vigilance organization is headed by one of the state’s most honest police officers, it can only be expected that he must have brought this to the notice of the Chief Minister under whose direct control the state vigilance organization works. Given the administrative and anti-corruption mechanism in the State, the vigilance organization can act against a corrupt minister or a top government official only after the organization gets a go ahead from the Chief Minister’s office. Before the anti-corruption body starts its process of gathering further evidence against the corrupt ministers, the Chief Minister must set the ball rolling by straightaway dropping them from the cabinet. What remains to be seen is whether the Chief Minister chooses to act with promptness and fortitude against the corrupt ministers as he starts his second three-year term in office. The first step towards ensuring that an entire department from the top to the bottom is cleansed of corruption would be to roll a few heads at the top. none more powerful than the minister. Only the coming days would prove whether Omar Abdullah decides to soft pedal or catch the bull by the horns. If Mayawati can act firmly it is difficult to understand what prevents Omar Abdullah from following suit.
