JAMMU, Jan 6: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah celebrated the decision of Sonia Gandhi and her loyalists like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and P Chidambaram to allow him to enjoy state power for another three years by organizing a massive function in the Civil Secretariat. There were reasons for him to celebrate the occasion. For, Sonia Gandhi’s decision had silenced those who were after the Chief Minister and for his replacement with some Congress leader.
The government had invited all the legislators belonging both to the ruling coalition and the opposition parties to witness the day of thanks-giving and celebrations. The PDP, which has 21 members in the assembly, held aloof from the function, thus indicating its unwillingness to share the Omar Abdullah’s happiness. The Panthers Party, which has three members in the assembly, also stayed away and expressed its unhappiness with the Chief Minister and the government that he has been leading since three years. The official BJP, which has four members in the assembly, also thought it prudent to hold aloof in its desperate attempt to create an impression that it, like the main opposition PDP and the Panthers Party, has no lost love for the NC-Congress coalition. The lone Jammu State Morcha MLA was also conspicuous by his absence.
Significantly, at least six of the seven expelled BJP MLAs were there sitting on a sofa, with their leader exchanging good words with one of them extending him very warm congratulation for his achievements and successes and for the opportunity that he got to lead the state till January 2014. Their presence in the function and their delighted faces explained many things and cleared many a doubt. Their presence, in addition, indicated the direction things are gradually heading towards.
However, the most striking aspect of the whole function was the absence of many a Congress legislator. Their absence was very significant. They were part of the ruling coalition. It was expected that they would attend the function in full strength to express solidarity with the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister, who represent the NC and the Congress, respectively, in the government. But they decided otherwise.
Why did most of the Congress legislators do so? Why did they hold aloof from the official function? Were they unhappy with the decision of Sonia Gandhi? Or, did they share the feelings of the aggrieved protagonists of change of guard and decided to abstain?
The general view in the Congress headquarters is that the “decision of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to allow the NC to rule the state for full term of six years will cause irreparable political damage to the Congress in the state, especially in Jammu province where people were looking forward to change of guard”. Ask anyone in the Congress headquarters, located at Residency Road, Jammu, about what they feel about the decision, the response would be the same: “Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have abandoned us like New Delhi has abandoned the people of Jammu province”. This should explain why most of the Congress legislators stayed away from the official function. Not a good sign!
