What kept Omar Abdullah’s crown intact?
1/7/2012 12:04:53 AM

Syed Junaid Hashmi
JAMMU, Jan 6: More than Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s purported closeness with Congress high command, UPA’s fluctuating fortunes in the centre and divided state Congress prevented ball from swinging other way around.
Early Times has credible evidence at hand which confirms that more than JKPCC President’s group; it was ex-Chief Minister’s and presently, Union minister’s coterie of leaders who obliquely ensured continuance of Omar Abdullah regime for next three years. JKPCC president and his group followed directions of Congress high command religiously including the decision to allow Omar to complete six year term.
On the contrary, loyalists of ex-Chief Minister would praise Omar in public and more importantly, even leave their senior leaders behind while singing peens in the praise of Chief Minister. However, they would decry functioning of the state government in private and call Omar Abdullah ‘Immature Twitter kid”. These leaders wanted Omar out of office by January 5, 2011 but they had no alternative available with them.
Their leaders and Ex-Chief Minister had already on numerous occasions during personal interactions with his political flock clarified to all and sundry that if given a chance, he would prefer returning to the state for six years instead of short 30 to 34 month tenure. Insiders maintain that once the Union Minister’s group came to know about this, they began projecting each other as next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Hence, divided deep within, the Union Minister’s obliquely ensured JKPCC president’s group does not take the hot-seat. On the contrary, hectic parleys were held to convince Congress leaders to remain united and ensure the party gets its due share when the time comes. However, these suffered major setback when a particular Congress minister from Kashmir valley began projecting himself as Chief Ministerial candidate.
Sources said that this minister met a senior Congress leader in New Delhi and pleaded for projecting him as the only suitable Chief Ministerial candidate. They added that the development further dented chances of Congress making merry on January 5 since now there was three-way spilt. This minister claimed support of two other MLAs and even boosted of getting the requisite number in his favour, said the sources.
They asserted that NC knew well about fissures within Congress and playing wise political move, they aggravated problems by creating euphoria of ex-Chief Minister and presently, Union Minister making efforts to return to the state. JKPCC president’s knee deep efforts to unite Congress could not succeed. Though he rejuvenated Congress across the state, which even reflected in the results of Panchayat elections; his efforts to rein in the rebel groups within the party could not meet with much success.
High command also did little to help JKPCC president in his efforts to make Congress, a self-sustaining party in Jammu and Kashmir. Last nail in the coffin of Congress expectations was put by anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare. His Jan Lokpal Bill campaign kept Union government on its toes. Though Anna fever is seemingly over, but the damage for Congress in J&K has been done.
On the backfoot and way behind in number game, Congress high command decided against change of guard in Jammu and Kashmir. They need MPs of National Conference (NC). They have begun openly saying that even one vote could change course of history in the upcoming union budget session. Besides, a senior congress leader in New Delhi justified no change of guard in Jammu and Kashmir by saying that “We cannot afford any kind of instability especially in a state like J&K where a mistake of few seconds could result in catastrophe.”
“Jan Lokpal Bill, 2G scam, 3G scam, Adarsh Housing Society Scam, Neira Radia tapes and I can name many more things. Above all these, instability in Kashmir would have serious repercussions on UPA since it is going to polls in five states. Change of guard at this moment would have meant taking a decision in hurry, which we could not have afforded at this time. So, it was decided to allow Omar to do his job,” added the leader.
