Intelligence failure behind Boniyar firing incident | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar/Jammu, Jan 7: Intelligence failure in providing basic inputs to the Government, especially the police, on the nature of the anti-power protest rally in front of the Uri power project at Boniyar in Baramullah on January, had resulted in the death of one boy and injuries to four others in the CISF firing. Security experts said that i n the light of intelligence failure in providing information about the plan of people to stage anti-power shortage demonstrations outside the NHPC run Uri power project the police had not taken any step to deploy lathi wielding police force. Had the intelligence agencies briefed the police in time police companies equipped with tear gas and non-lethal weapons would have been posted for controlling the angry protesters. They said that the CISF men, not trained and equipped for tackling demonstrations, opened fire under a mistaken belief that the protesters were going to damage the power project. These experts, including senior police functionaries, have suggested to the state and central intelligence agencies to tone up their method of collecting information about the plans of people and the separ artists so that preventive and corrective measures were taken in hand in advance. The experts equally blamed the state Government, especially Minister, Taj Mohiuddin, for having projected the NHPC as a looter of state water resources. Explaining it that acute power crisis had caused a lot of inconvenience and hardships to people in the valley but instead of directing their anger against the state Government they targeted the NHPC run Uri project. It was done after they had been led to believe that the NHPC had been starving the state by generating electricity on state's water resources. The Congress high command is being told to bridle volatile Taj Mohiuddin so that he stops inciting people against the NHPC.
