Road Safety week concludes

JAMMU, JANUARY 07- The week long road safety week concluded today. The theme of the week was “Accidents bring tears safety brings cheers”.
Minister for CAPD and Transport Qamir Ali Akhoon was the chief guest whileas Minister of State for Transport Mr. Shabir Ahmed Khan was guest of honour on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister for Transport Mr. Akhoon called upon the officers of Transport Department to ensure strict implementation of traffic rules to avoid road accidents and provide an effective traffic management to the people adding that awareness camps about road safety measures at different levels can go a long way in minimizing road accidents across the State.
Mr. Akhoon appealed the people to cooperate with the Transport and Traffic departments in checking overloading. He asked concerned authorities to involve the public in their endeavours for better traffic management on all routes of the State particularly hilly areas. He asked them to advise the drivers to obey traffic rules and develop safe driving habits to contain road accidents.
The Minister said that the government has already constituted house committee to look into the frequent causes road accidents took place in hilly districts of Kishtwar-Doda during last assembly session. He said the Committee is submitting its report with suggestions in coming budget session.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of State for Transport Mr. Khan said that now-a-day improvement in vehicle design, occupant protection and vehicle maintenance have made a significant contribution to crash reduction but still our State has been witnessing so many tragic road accidents in hilly areas because of overloading of passenger buses which is a serious safety hazard for all road users.
Mr. Khan instructed the officers to conduct regular checking of vehicles and ensure that no overloading and rash driving take place. He said stringent action would be taken against those who indulge in violation of traffic norms and reckless driving, adding that a campaign would be launched to check fitness certificates, seating arrangement and the size of seats across the state.

Kuldeep Khoda, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Commissioner Secretary Transport, Pardeep Gupta, Inspector General of Police Traffic Mr. Hemant Kumar Lohia, Transport Commissioner Mr. Mehraj Ahmed Kakroo, Director Garages, Managing Director JKSRTC, RTO Jammu, students, prominent citizens and other associations related to transport were present on the occasion.
