Nomad becomes first casualty of snow this winter; son, another family rescued in Ramban

JAMMU, Jan 07: As heavy snowfall occured in the upper reaches of Ramban last night
and today, a nomad and his son got trapped along with their cattle in the hills while
they were on their way from Bajmasta to Chiranbaas in Ramban.
Another family landed in trouble after the roof of their house at Sanigam near Parhinder in Neil area gave way to heavy snowfall last night.SP (Ramban) Anil Magotra said a sarpanch late Friday night called up Ramban PCR and informed that Abdul Ghani Gujjar (50), son of Neema Gujjar of Bajmasta, and his son Rafiq (19) were trapped in snow and he had heard their cries.
They were on their way to Chiranbass along with their cattle when it started snowing heavily and they got trapped in 5 to 6 ft of snow.
The SP said acting on the sarpanch's call, cops of Ramsoo police station were immediately despatched to the spot. After walking through about 8 km of snow covered mountain passes, the police team reached the place where the nomads were, he added.Both the father and the son were searched out with the help of locals and shifted to a safer place. While Ghani later died, the condition of Rafiq was stated to be critical.Magotra said due to heavy snowfall, the house of Ghulam Mohiudin Malik, son of Lassu Malik, collapsed at Sanigam and the family got trapped under the debris.
After the matter came to their notice, cops from Neil police post were despatched to the area. It took them about 7 hours to reach there, he added.
The SP said all the family members were rescued and shifted with the help of locals to a safer place.
He said instructions had been issued to all the SHOs and heads of police posts to act fast on any information that came to them about people trapped in snow in the areas that fell under their jurisdiction.Police had also been instructed to make sure that hotliers and dhaba owners did not charge extra money from those stranded on the highway.
