`Panchayat elections cannot be substitute for development" | What new era Mr Gul? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 7: Advisor to Chief Minister Mubarak Gul on Friday complemented the people of Jammu and Kashmir for extending their whole hearted support to the coalition government led by Omar Abdullah, saying this has enabled the State to usher in a new era of peace and development. As far as peace is concerned, the National Conference led government cannot escape responsibility for disrupting peace. Had NC not rigged the 1987 elections, the situation would have been different today. The separatists who run the show today had willingly participated in the electoral politics. The Hizbul Muahideen Chief, Muhammad Yusuf alias Syed Salah-ud-Din was a candidate from Amira Kadal constituency. The JKLF Chief Muhammad Yasin Malik was his polling agent. Had NC allowed fair elections Yusuf would be drawing MLA pension today and Yasin Malik would have started a business. But this is past. During the current regime, NC role has not been any different. In 2010 year 120 persons most of them school going children got killed. Last year 202 including 71 security personnel have lost their lives. What Peace is Gul talking about? The PDP has been an eye sore for the NC. Every day the NC leadership issues statements against the Muftis and the PDP. In a democratic set up criticism must be welcomed otherwise it would lead to anarchy. And, how can the NC expect a cake walk when it has almost failed on all fronts. NC boasts of improved health care but the District Hospitals seek medicines from NGOs. Last week an NGO donated 400 Anti Rabid Vaccines (ARV) to District Hospital Anantnag. The NC government also boasts of improving educational standards. But most of the government schools run in a single room. There are schools where a single teacher manages three hundred students. The state earned the label of most corrupt state in NC rule. The city of Srinagar which according to Omar Abdullah forms the face of Jammu Kashmir continues to be the third dirtiest city in the country. Voices of a separate state have been heard from Jammu region and Ladakh has declared `independence' by abandoning the use of National Conference `manufactured' state flag. And last but not the least, Panchayat elections may win the government a few thousand bucks from New Delhi . But it cannot be a substitute for development. |
