Space for pro-Indian parties shrunk in year bygone | 202 killings in 2011 belie normality claims | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 7: A report released by a credible human rights group has put a question mark on the achievements of the National Conference led coalition government. It also explodes the much trumpeted normality myth. The report says that the bygone `peaceful' year witnessed 202 killings. The deceased include 71 security personnel and 8 political workers. Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) has once again shaken the government by its report. Earlier it was in news for identification of around 2700 unmarked graves in North Kashmir. The report `Buried Evidence' was vindicated by the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC). According to the report, 6 women, 11 students, 71 security personnel, 100 militants and eight political workers got killed. Among the deceased were 4 National Conference workers/leaders, 2 Congress activists and one Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worker. This is an indication that the space for pro-Indian political parties is shrinking especially in the Valley. And if it is any indicator then the situation cannot be termed as normal or favourable, believe political circles. The death of 71 security personnel is too big a number to be ignored. This indicates the militants have been able to strike with ease and at will. Six unidentified bodies were also recovered during 2011 from various places. No serious effort was made to identify the victims. Among the victims, 8 persons, mostly children got killed in blasts across Kashmir. And last but not the least 2 persons were subjected to enforced disappearance. The disappearances took place at a time when the issue of mass graves was giving sleep less nights to the authorities. |
