Cong veteran singing in the strain of the swan | Rotational CM | | Neha JAMMU, Jan 8: Congress veteran and former Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma was one person in the Congress party who consistently fought for rotational Chief Ministership. He started his campaign for achieving the objective in March 2011. Thereafter, he raised the issue again and again. He raised the issue at Hiranagar, at Samba, at Vijaypur, at Ramlila Maidan, Gandhi Nagar, and at the party forum. He raised the issue in the presence of the JKPCC president, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz, as also discussed it with the Congress high command. All through Sharma stated and restated that it would be suicidal for the Congress party if it allowed the NC to rule the state for a full term of six years. All through he underlined that the maintenance of status quo would cause an irreparable damage to the Congress party in the state in general and Jammu province in particular. All through he maintained that his insistence on breaking the status quo was based on the feelings of the Congress' rank and file. All through he maintained that the Congress was a national formation and that it would be only desirable if the Congress attained an effective position in the state government. And, all through he bemoaned that the NC consistently accorded a very shabby treatment to the Congress leaders and workers and emphasized the need for a mechanism that would treat the Congress party equally with the NC. Sharma today is a broken-hearted person and he is singing in the strain of the swan. He has virtually given up and accepted that there is none in the Congress high Command who has any regard whatever for the sentiments of the local Congress leadership and workers. He has acknowledged that the Congress has no other option what to throw in its lot with the NC and suffer humiliations and losses in the process. That he is a pledged Congressman, that he is a broken-hearted person and that today he is singing in the strain of the swan became more than clear yesterday when he opened his heart and shared his feelings. He reportedly said: "The Congress workers are feeling ignored in the coalition Government...We had earlier also raised the issue of neglect of Congress leaders and workers by the coalition Government. We have projected our demand. We have been assured that the grievances of Congress on this front would be redressed…I had raised the issue of rotational Chief Minister-ship but the Congress high command didn't accept his demand. So, I have left the demand now". What he said yesterday was self-explanatory and what he said reflected his helplessness and the helplessness of an overwhelming majority of the Congress workers and the bulk of JKPCC office-bearers. But more than that, what he said clearly suggested that the Congress has no political future in the state. And, remember he expressed these feelings in the presence of the JKPCC president and the occasion was the meeting of the Congress-NC coordination Committee. |
