All is not well within BJP in J&K: As "inner coterie" projects Jitender as next state president, party frets | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Jan 8: All is not well within BJP in J&K. Already faced with a turmoil after the ouster of seven MLAS in cash-for-vote scam in the council elections, the party may split up into groups over the issue of the top post in the state. The 3-year term of the present state BJP president Shamsher Manhas expires in an year, or so, but the lobbying for the top post has already begun. Party sources said an "inner coterie" around Manhas had started projecting Dr Jitender Singh as the next president of the state BJP. Others in the race included MLA Ashok Khajuria, Nirmal Singh, MLA Jugal Kishore and Chander Prakash Ganga. The sycophants of the "coterie" were, however, making all efforts to project Jitender as the successor of Manhas. Those who were not part of this 'group of shared interests' wanted the new president to be someone with a long political career and a grip over the masses, the sources added. They said the new president had to be someone who could steer the party out of the crisis that it was faced with after the expulsion of seven MLAs from the party on alleged corruption charges. The old and loyal party leaders were also unhappy with the ways of working of Manhas, incharge party affairs (J&K) Jagdish Mukhi and co-incharges -- Dr Anil Jain, RP Singh and JP Nadda. Sources said while the state leadership was not projecting real picture of the party in J&K to the high command in New Delhi, Mukhi, Jain, Singh and Nadda seemed to not have taken any notice of it, and if they had taken any, it was not known to the party. They said a leader like Shanta Kumar be made incharge of party affairs in J&K. Kumar, who held this post earlier too, had proved that he possessed the qualities of head and heart, they added. Sources said had the state leadership acted on time before the council elections, the cross-voting could have been easily avoided. Since the party was unable to vote its candidate to victory as it did not have the number of MLAs required for the purpose, it should have abstained from the electoral process, the sources added. Sources said due to mishandling of the day-to-day party affairs, there had been lack of coordination among the office bearers. This was badly affecting the party structure and the top leaders were a demoralised lot, the sources added. Sources said many leaders were unhappy with the way in which the state leadership, riddled with "coterie politics", was leading the party. Some ministers in the NC-Congress coalition government were allegedly faced with serious charges of corruption but the party had failed to exploit the situation in its favour. "The party lacks planning and coordination among its leaders," the sources added. Sources said senior party leaders felt ignored as they were not being consulted on important issues. "All important decisions are being taken by the coterie led by the state president," the sources alleged. The "unhappy" leaders appealed to the high command to intervene and save the party from further disaster.
