Soz deserves another term as PCC Chief
1/9/2012 11:31:37 PM
A feeble demand for change in the PCC set up in order to appoint a senior party leader belonging to the Jammu region as President of the state unit of the Congress surfaced in recent days. Those who have been supporting this demand argue that being a member of Rajya Sabha and having many irons in the fire Prof.Saif-ud-Din Soz has not been able to devote full time for party affairs in the state. They say that Soz has been spending more time in Delhi than in the state with the result problems of the party and its workers remain unresolved thereby making the congress in Jammu and Kashmir toothless. Those who voice the dmand for replacing Soz by a Congress leader from the Jammu region have completely ignored the contribution of Soz in keeping the Congress flag flying when the National Conference leadership has been trying to weaken the Congress in the state. In support of their contention they cite the example of Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, taking for ride the Congress leadership in the state with the result not only Soz even the Congress ministers have been kept in the dark by Omar while taking important decisions.
Senior functionaries of the congress apprehend the hand of Ghulam Nabi Azad, union Health Minister, and his supporters behind the move aimed at replacing Soz by a Jammu based party leader. To them if the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir has shown slight signs of infirmity it is the result of anti-Soz machinations from the Azad led camp in the party. If the National Conference leadership has been taking the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir for a ride despite sharing power with it it is the outcome of factional feuds within the organisation. In fact the NC leadership has shown no inhibitions in cashing on the dissensions in the Congress.During the last three years Soz as PCC President has been fighting on various fronts. He has been trying to keep the NC leadership in check so that it is not able to trample upon the Congress. He has been fighting against the dissidents and has succeeded in keeping the Congress ministers vocal while raising issues of public interest in the cabinet meetings. It is during his tenure as PCC Chief that the Congress completed its membership drive registering a new record in the enrolement of members in all the three regions in the state.
Those who have been demanding change in the PCC set up ignore the importance of Congress in the Kashmir valley where the two valley centric parties, the National Conference and the PDP,have been instrumental in promoting regional politics.During the last over 30 years the state unit of the Congress has been headed by a party leader belonging to the Kashmir valley. Ch.Mohd.Aslam has been the only exception as he too headed the PCC for some years. It was done to convey to the people of Kashmir that Congress was not a regional party and believed in complete unity among the three regions in Jammu and Kashmir. There is no doubt that as compared to the Kashmir valley the Congress has bigger and stronger areas of influence in the Jammu region which is reflected by the number of Assembly seats the Congress wins in the Jammu region. If it wins three seats from he Kashmir valley its tally in the Jammu region is between 15 and 19 seats. This way there is need for strengthening the Congress in the Kashmir valley and this can be done if the PCC is headed by a party leader from Kashmir.Comparatively Prof.Soz has been as much dynamic in keeping the Congress flag flying in difficult circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir as Mufi Mohd. Sayeed had been in late 70's.A majority of Congress leaders want another term for Soz.
