A candid analysis of BJP in J&K: It is riddled with internal bickering, conspiracies

JAMMU, Jan 9: A candid analysis of the last 10 years of BJP in J&K shows that the party is riddled with internal bickerings and conspiracies. None of its leaders has so far made a sincere effort to clear the air at Pt Prem Nath Dogra bhavan here and keep the flock together as a result of which the party is virtually turned into a divided house. It may face mutiny under the present circumstances.
"Coterie politics" took roots in the party in 10 years. During this period, while the party gradually became weaker (leaving the political mileage it got after Bhum-Bhum Bholay agitation), some senior leaders grew stronger in terms of wealth and attained grip over the party apparatus.
The first victim of conspiracy was Chander Mohan Sharma. He was denied ticket from Jammu West assembly segment even as he and his father Pt Jagan Nath (now dead), had nurtured the constituency for many years. In his place, H L Dogra (now dead), a close confidant of the expelled MLA Chaman Lal Gupta, was given the mandate.
Chander quit the party in protest. His "ouster" cleared the way of a junior leader to head the party in the state. Had Chander not left BJP and carried on the fight for his rights while remaining in the party, he was sure to become president.
Another conspiracy was hatched when firebrand leader, Choudhary Piara Singh and Prem Lal (who represented Hiranagar constituency) quit the party on almost "no" grounds and joined NC. Rumour was that Ashok Khajuria was also to resign and join NC but it did not happen.
Both Singh and Prem belonged to the Khajuria camp. Neither of the two was, however, made minister (as promised by some in NC) in the Farooq Abdullah-headed cabinet. Prem, however, got benefitted in the way that a STD/PCO opened by him inside the MLA hostel was not closed by the government despite pressure from within the ruling NC.
Before his departure from party, Prem reportedly was humiliated at the residence of senior BJP leader during a party. And this left him disheartened when he related the whole story to party men at BJP head office and nothing was initiated in this matter.
Some of the BJP leaders have also attained notoriety of making false promises to the people during elections. The party, which lost its credibility after seven of its MLAs were expelled for their alleged involvement in the cash-for-vote scam in council elections, was badly riddled with internal bickering.
Seniors were alleged to be coming in the way of juniors who wanted to work for strengthening the party. There was strong resentment in them in this regard.
If corrective steps are not taken at the earliest, the cracks could widen further and the party might face mutiny, party insiders feel.
The cash-for-vote scam was also the outcome of a deep-rooted conspiracy, a party leader said.
He said if the party or any government agency wanted to dig into the scam, it would be proper to get details of the cellphone calls of all the BJP MLAs before the council elections were held last year.
Through the call details, it would be easy to know which MLA had spoken to the "beneficiaries" and for how long, he added.
