No respite from cold in Kashmir; Dal, water bodies remained frozen | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 9 : There was no respite from the cold in the Kashmir valley, where snow remained on roof tops and water on roads remained frozen, making pedestrian and vehicle movement almost impossible. More than 100 persons, majority of them elderly, were injured after they fell because of slippery road conditions. Doctors and experts have advised people, particularly elderly persons and children, to avoid moving out of their homes in the morning and evening hours because of severe cold outside. Major parts of the world famous Dal Lake and other water bodies remained frozen though the minimum temperature was up by a notch in Srinagar this morning. However, due to four degree below normal maximum temperature yesterday and today, the frozen parts of the Lake did not witness any change. The water taps in majority areas in the city and outskirts remained frozen resulting in water shortage. People were seen heating water taps to defreeze the water. Driver at many places were also seen burning wood to defreeze diesel in the vehicle of their tanks.A Met department spokesman said there could be more rain and snow during the next 24 hours. Both minimum and maximum temperature will remain below normal, he said. |
