Lull in US drone strike may hit peace in Kashmir ? | | | Will the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan and the suspension in the US Drone attacks in Pak-Afghan border belt increase security instability in Jammu and Kashmir where during the last six months signs of peace have promoted political stability ?This question is being debated among public and political circles in Jammu and Kashmir after reports reached the northern Indian state indicating major regrouping among terrorists of various hues including the Talibans and the Al Qaeda in the NWFR,besides the Swat and the Waziristan belts.Reports say that following a two-month long lull in the US Drone strikes in Pakistan has helped embolden Al Qaeda and other terrorist outfits to regroup and increase attacks on the Pakistani security forces and NATO troops in Afghanistan.According to these reports, terrorists are taking advantage of tension raised by the US drone attack in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed forcing Islamabad to seek snapping of military and economic ties with Washington. Pause in the US air strikes is said to have given freedom of movement to the terrorists not only in Pakistan but in Afghanistan too.Washington is not yet prepared to resume the drone attacks since it was in the process of mending fences with Islamabad. The mid November drone strike in which 24 Pakistan soldiers had been killed had angered the top brass in the Pakistani Army to such an extent that despite its unwillingness Asif Zardari led Government was left with no other alternative but to withdraw air bases that had been made available to the US forces.Three-year long presence of US led forces in Afghainstan and in Pak-Afghan border areas had caused confusion among the terrorist outfits. They were on the run and now they have started regrouping with the aim of intensifying their attacks against Pakistani security forces and in one such recent attack 15 Pak soldiers had been killed in the NWF region. Latest reports have revealed that terrorist related violence has increased by 10 per cent in the tribal areas of Pakistan during the last 15 days. These reports say that with increase in terrorist strikes Islamabad has begun moves for negotiating with some Taliban factions. What worries Islamabad is the report suggesting that various Taliban leaders were working out a plan for hammering out coordination and reconciliation among various terrorist groups. These reports indicate that in case Pakistan was forced by the US policy to bank solely on the Chinese military and economic aid it could encourage terrorists of various hues to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir for giving teeth to the ongoing liberation struggle which otherwise had lost its nerve owing to antiinsurgency and antiinfiltration operations launched by the security forces.Since Islamabad and the Pakistani Army are in favour of buying peace by negotiating with the Talibans and other terrorist groups militants may now be free to cross into Jammu and Kashmir.Once truce is hammerd out between the two sides across the border Pakistani Army may given open assistance to groups of militants in infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir and if that happened it could increase violence and security instability in Jammu and Kashmir. This calls for further upgrading the security grid in the state. |
