Defamation of Kashmiris only achievement of Omar Govt: Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 10: The Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti today said `defamation of Kashmiris was the only achievement of three year tenure of Omar Abdullah government. While addressing a press conference here today, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said, "In 2009 women were the target in the wake of Shopian incident, in 2010 an entire generation was dubbed as criminals, stone throwers and drug addicts. 2011 was rounded off by branding us as power thieves." She said the self respect and dignity of the state has never been threatened so much by anyone least of all its own government. Accusing the government of total failure, the leader of opposition said the response of the authorities to recent snow fall has touched a new low. Mehbooba said since this government assumed office, more than 500 MWs of power have been added to the state resources yet the supply position has gone bad and so has the distribution. "Government owes an explanation to the people for this disastrous performance, especially the chief minister who heads the power portfolio himself", she said. Mufti said last week's moderate snowfall exposed this government to the hilt. "We appreciate the hard work put in by state and power grid engineers in restoring the transmission lines at great personal risk, the lack of leadership and preparedness in normal times came out glaringly", she added. Criticizing the recent verdict of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC), PDP president said, "It is a damning verdict against the State Government. "Obliviously the Chief Minister especially as the minister in charge can't escape from the import of this verdict," she said. She also talked about failure of the government to clear vital road links in South Kashmir. Omar Abdullah's claim that there is no scarcity of essential items is not based on facts, PDP president said. "I am sure he should not be considering cooking gas, kerosene, sugar, rice and atta as essential commodities." Mocking the remarks of Omar regarding power supply cut off in VVIP areas, Mehbooba Mufti said, "The pronouncement of shutting off power to VIP areas is not the answer to the problem because they are all in Jammu.' |
