Sub zero temperature in valley Since 48 hours | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Jan 10: With Srinagar recording seasons coldest day on Tuesday, subzero temperature in the Kashmir valley has persisted since past 48 hours- a record of sorts for the region in past decade. A meteorological official said this summer capital recorded coldest day of the season so far at minus 1.0 degrees Celsius, surpassing previous record low of minus 0.5 deg Cel yesterday. The temperature is six degrees below normal for during the prevailing Chillai Kalan, a 40-day period of extreme cold beginning December 21.Even though the night temperature increased by nearly two degrees from minus 4.2 deg Cel (yesterday) to minus 2.8 deg Cel, it was one degree below normal, the MeT official said adding the sub-zero temperature has now persisted from past 48 hours. As most of the lakes and other water bodies have started freezing in the Valley, people especially commuters had tough time as sub-zero temperatures led to slick on roads, causing difficultly in commuting. Gulmarg, the world famous tourist resort in north Kashmir, witnessed coldest night in entire Kashmir division including Ladakh. The hill resort, teeming with tourists, recorded a low of minus 16.2 deg Cel against minus 14.5 deg Cel deg Celsius yesterday. Pahalgam, the world famous hill station in south Kashmir, was the second coldest in the Valley, recording minimum of minus 11.4 deg Cel while it had maximum of minus 2.0 deg Cel. Qazigund, the gate way town of Kashmir, and its neighboring Kokernag had a minimum of minus 4.8 deg Cel and minus 6.7 degrees Cel respectively, the official said. Frontier Kupwara district in north Kashmir too reeled under deep freeze as low temperature settled at minus 4.2 deg Cel while it had maximum of minus 0.4 deg Cel, the MeT office said. Ladakh region also continue to reel under intense cold with its capital city Leh, recording a minimum of minus 14.8 deg cel against minus 8.6 degrees Cel yesterday. "Light rain or snow could occur at isolated places in Kashmir divisions and mainly dry weather in Jammu division," the MeT said. The "could" according to the weather terminology stands for 25 percents chances. The authorities also issued fresh avalanche warning in many areas close to the mountain ranges in north and south of Kashmir while the icy road continued to give travel headaches to commuters particularly during the morning hours.
