Controversy over Rushdie visit a poll gimmick: CM
1/12/2012 12:28:17 AM
Jammu: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said the controversy over noted writer Salman Rushdie's visit to India is nothing but a gimmick of poll politics. He said average Indian Muslims were not bothered as they are more concerned with their day to day routine and earning livelihood.
"It is not for the first time Rushdie is visiting India ……those raking the issue up are doing so for political exploitation….I also think we are underestimating the intelligence of Indian Muslims", Omar said adding that we try to raise such issues which have no bearing on general masses.
"For an average Muslim it is no issue…..they are concerned with day to day issues and their livelihood", the Chief Minister said observing it being election time, the issue is being whipped up loudly. The Chief also said to another query that so far he has not received any invitation from Congress for campaigning . "I would certainly go the day I receive it", he asserted. He said this while replying to queries of media at Parade Ground after the rally concluded.
To another question he ruled out having received any intelligence inputs from any agency of possible terror strike or militant activity aimed at disrupting ensuing Republic Day celebrations.
"I do not think our government has received any such report out of routine…..there are many states which reports on maintaining vigil and alertness on the eve of the national day but that is something in routine", the Chief Minister said while replying to the questions of media on the sidelines of a rally organized at Parade Ground here today. He said there are absolutely no reports of any sort of trouble to be anticipated in J&K either militancy related or law and order problem. He said such speculative things make round every year and each time my government with full preparedness on all fronts has proved such information wrong.
