| TO AVOID FAT POWER BILLS CONSUMERS SWITCHING OVER TO LPG | | | Jammu, Jan 14 In order to avoid fat power bills majority of households across the state are once again switching over to use of LPG cylinders for boiling water and cooking in peak winter season for their daily use. This has already resulted in peak demand shooting up by over 30 per cent in the state forcing the Consumer Affairs and Public distribution department to review its assessment as per the current demand. Both in Jammu and Kashmir regions, the demand for LPG gas cylinders ahve gone up considering long spell of winters.Absence of uncurtailed power and istallation of meters have forced people to rely on LPG thananything else. With unrelenting mercury showing no signs of heading up and grim power scenario staring in the face miseries of LPG consumers are far from over .Compared to a waiting period of four to five days, for getting a refill, the same is likely to be extended further to meet up the demand in the absence of increased supply. "In the recent months the demand of LPG cylinders had shot up by 30 per cent following use of gas cylinders for heating purposes by general masses", a leading LPG distributor in Gandhinagar area said. He said, installation of electronic meters and absence of uncurtailed power supply in peak winter season is putting undue pressure on LPG distributors across the state as most of the consumers had switched over to use of LPG cylinders instead of heater for boiling water and other work to avoid fat power bills”. According to the distributors, the demand for the LPG cylinders has gone up by 30 per cent during the last one year.Since the state Government has not so far made any assessment of the gap between the demand andsupply the the problem of shortage has not been resolved. Distributors said that they have been receiving bigger demand for the LPG cylinders than they did over a year ago. Explaining it they said that after the electronic metres were installed by the Power Development Department people had stopped using electric appliances for cooking and heating.People no longer bank on heaters and geasers and most of the time LPG cylinders were being used for all odd chores in the kitchens. Another factor for the shortage of LPG cylinders was that the concerned agencies had not regularised the connections by segregating domestic connections from the commercial ones. The result was that a major portion of the LPG cylinders were supplied to commercial establishments, including hotels, restaurant, dhabas, confectioners and wayside tea vendors whose number had mushroomed in Srinagar and Jammu towns. Yet another reason was that VIPs,including ministers, legislators and bureaucrats had managed to have more than three connections with the result common people had to suffer the inconvenience of a long cooling period for getting refilled cylinders. Distributors said that about eight lakh LPG connections had been registered in the state with them. But with people having more than tthree spare cylinders the demand"is a continous affair." They suggested to the Government to carry out a fresh assessment of the requirement in the state so that a fresh request was sent to the centre for increasing the LPG quota to Jammu and Kashmir. |
