Veteran journalist Suraj Saraf passes away | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 13: Veteran journalist Suraj Saraf passed away at the Government Medical College Hospital here this morning. He was 87 and had been ailing for some time. Saraf, who was born on June 24, 1924 in Jammu, worked in prestigious national and international media organisations including Times of India, Hindu, Women's Era, National Geographic Society, WANA, INFA, The Christian, Science Monitor, Pioneer and PTI, besides working for the first newspaper of Jammu Ranbir. After graduating in Science from Jammu, he was awarded a Gold Medal for his outstanding performance in LL.B which he pursued at Punjab University, Lahore. Thereafter Saraf joined the Bar but left the legal profession half way feeling uncomfortable with the necessity to lie on a few occasions. He then joined the Air Force but continued there for a short time after which he was appointed as Public Relations Officer by the Government of J&K in 1965. Suraj Prakash worked for the upliftment of local journalist fraternity of J&K. Having made a niche in the field of journalism, he was a prolific writer and his popular published works include Jammu Darshan, Babore and Krimchi while the last one released on June 24, 2011 was Jammu Heritage. Being recipient of various awards, Saraf was also honoured by the International Photography Association for his photojournalistic excellence. The body of the veteran journalist was cremated today at the Jogi Gate crematorium with people from all walks of life especially the Journalist fraternity present on the occasion to bid last farewell to the doyen of journalism. |
