Malik, Khan ghearoed by students during their visit to GDC Mendhar | | | Early Times Report mendhar (poonch), Jan 13: Two ministers of Omar Abdullah government had to face the wrath of the students during their visit to Government Degree College Mendhar today'. The two ministers including Minister of Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik and Minister of state for Power, Shabir Ahmed Khan who visited GDC Mendhar to attend the parent -teacher meet were ghearoed by hundreds of students owing allegiance to Jammu-Poonch Students Union at College gate when they were about to leave the College. The protesting students shouted slogans against the government for lack of facilities in the College forcing them not to leave the College but to sort out the problems of student community with them. The protesting students accused the Government for lack of basic facilities in the college and warned agitation. Bowing to students pressure the two ministers agreed to discuss their problems with student leaders and delayed their further engagements. The irate students who protested against the lack of facilities in the College alleged that government has failed to construct the compound walling around the college with the result the college ground has become a raising ground for cattle of the Mendhar township and adjoining areas. Moreover there is no botanical garden and lawn in the college. The bathrooms are without water connections and other facilities, they alleged and urged the Ministers to issue on spot orders in settling these problems of the students. They said though the college was shifted to new building over two months back but authorities did not bother to provide the basic facilities to the college resulting into lot of trouble to the students and staff. Besides they alleged that PG campus in Mendhar college is functioning in a single class room with one computer for last seven years and students for PG classes have to seek admission in Jammu University or other universities. They demanded that the PG classed be also shifted to Mendhar Degree College. They alleged that despite lot of pleas to the authorities from time to time they failed to concede the demand resulting into a lot of resentment among the students. They warned that in case demands were not conceded immediately the students will launch agitation. Later the ministers discussed the problems with student leaders and assured them that early steps will be taken is solving the genuine demands of the student community of the area. It may be recalled that the Mendhar Degree College students had opposed shifting the college to new building two months back due to lack of proper facilities and at that time the authorities had assured them that the pending works in the College will be completed soon with construction of compound wall but till date no steps were taken by authorities in this regard resulting in lot of resentment among people of the area in general and student community in particular. |
