There are laws to punish the offenders but most of the women are not aware of the laws, said Neelam a constable.
Neha sharma a victim rues, "My in-laws used to beat me up because during my marriage my parents didn't gave them utensils and clothes. Instead he gave them dining chair table. My husband did not support me and used to lock me up in the house. I was not allowed to put a step outside the house though I was educated but helpless as my education could not help me tackling such people".
She cam yo know about the women cell through an acquaintance and filed a complaint. An ASI in the ell, Jaspreet said, "As now the law has been passed by the government now any culprit who is found guilty would be punished sternly and under section 498 a minimum of three year imprisonment would be awarded to the guilty as well as the associated parents or in-laws".
She added, "There is lack of proper awareness amongst the women especially about the domestic violence and I think an awareness campaign must be launched to educate women about their rights".
"Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviors and tactics used by the person to gain control and power. This act has the same impression as that of the terrorism in the society; the difference is that domestic violence is done within a home. But our motto at the women cell is to provide complete safeguard to the accused. We do not take rest till we do not take stern action against the guilty. I make sure that the decision taken is pious", said Shakti Sharma, SHO women cell canal road.
She added, "It embraces threatening act, family violence, and intimate partner violence. Our aim is always to solve the cases through counselling of both the parties and around 90% we are successful .I have made it a point that not only can a women but even the men or the in-laws can come to us for registration of report".
