The man, who "sold" city traffic points as SSP, now lobbies to come back to traffic police as IG

Jammu, Jan 13: The SSP, who once "sold" main city points to his field officers, was now lobbying to come back to traffic police as IG.
The points put to sale by him were still considered "lucrative" in traffic police circles, police sources said.
Sources said while his this act was in no way helpful in the reduction of traffic congestion, it contributed a lot to the mess that already existed on the city roads here.
That he had stooped so low became known when a former J&K DGP, in a chat with a select group of journalists and his senior officers at police officers' mess here, made this revelation, quoting the information that flowed to him from different agencies.
"I was surprised when I came to know that the SSP had sold various rotaries and other important city points to traffic police Inspectors and SIs," he said.
The DGP said while the SSP ought to have focussed on streamlining the traffic system on the congested city roads, he opted to post Inspectors and SIs at vital points allegedly against a payment.
The SSP, who was now DIG, was likely to get promotion to the next rank of IGP very soon. He had, however, started lobbying in advance to get his first posting as IG in traffic police, the sources added.
There already existed two vacancies of IGPs which were created following the retirement of Farooq Ahmad in November and MA Anjum in August last year. Four more IGPs were to retire by May this year. They included PTA director Ashok Gupta, police housing corporation IGP Amin Shah, IGP (crime, Kashmir) Raja Aijaz Ali and ZA Chisti.
While Chisti was to retire in May, Gupta, Aiyaz and Shah would attain superannuation in February. There were now six vacancies of IGPs which were likely to be filled by the government at the earliest.
Sources said these would be filled by promoting equal number of DIGs to the next rank of IGPs.
