'Factor 14' facilitates NC patron to enjoy JKCA crown | Cricket in a shambles! | | B Kirti Jammu, Jan 14: Notwithstanding the tall claims made the office bearers of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) that they promote cricket in nooks and corners of the state, the poor show by J&K Ranji trophy team in T20 and 4-day matches this season, as also the poor preparation for the forthcoming one-dayers in the next month, portraits picture of the cricket administrators with regard to promotion of the game in J&K. With just a month left for the commencement of North Zone Ranji Trophy One-Day Tournament, the administrators of JKCA including its Chief, Dr Farooq Abdullah, are least bothered to regroup the J&K Ranji trophy squad, particularly after a dismal performance, to make it a well knit unit by taking advantage of the services of the hired coach of great reputation, the former India captain Bishen Singh Bedi. For that matter, there is no harm in saying that the state cricket is in a shambles, while the president of state cricket's elitist body enjoys the crown of reigning the kingdom. Anyway, if my recall is right, it was the same president of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, who was hell-bent upon to oppose the introduction of Sports Bill floated by the Union Sports Minister, Ajay Maken in the Parliament, which, otherwise would have shut doors for the people like NC Patron to be part of any association, apart from bringing the associations under Right to Information (RTI) Act. There Farooq got the support of many parliamentarians, who were sailing in the same boat including the likes of Lalus, Shuklas, Chautalas, Sinhas and Jaitleys. And, in J&K, the JKCA chief is helped by 'Factor 14' to be the president of the association and enjoy its tiara. Now, the question arises as to what is this 'Factor 14'. See. 63 members constitute the JKCA Working Committee and out of these members, fourteen are from government institutions, while out of the rest 49 members, fourteen belong to National Conference, making it a 28 member voting team, which is a huge number in deciding the winner at the time of elections, and the JKCA constitution remains wanting. That is where the voice of genuine voters is lost in the dirt of politics, in the scheme of things in JKCA. So, it would not be out of place to term the ruling JKCA forum as the National Conference quorum. "When the team fails to perform even under the guidance of great Bishen Singh Bedi, then it is obvious that there is something fishy behind the curtain. One gets a feeling that it may be internal bickering within the association that makes the system poor," said a cricket coach while expressing anonymity. Rather than finding ways and means to enhance the standard of the game in the state, even the ruling members are hell-bent upon to knock each others heads off in order to be part of the wealthy, no matter the unhealthy cricket association. No-doubt, you need a top brass politician to run the affairs of the association effectively, however, he should be surrounded by the men with technical wisdom to do the job, which is missing in JKCA and that hits cricket and cricketers badly. Hiring Bedi for a huge amount of money does not set Tames on Fire and what is needed is to make full use of his experience and wisdom, to produce a better team in the future. In this context, atleast a month-long coaching camp for the Ranji trophy probable is the demand of the situation. Otherwise, expecting good performance from the state team in the forthcoming North Zone tournament is to red-rag a bull. Mr president, rather than waiting for his lucky 'Factor 14' in the next JKCA elections, should lead from the front by harnessing his dynamism and energy, to save the association members from further bickering and help the cause of cricket and cricketers in the future. |
