Plugging border loopholes is key to peace in Kashmir: Experts | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 15: Top functionaries of the state police, CRPF, and various intelligence agencies have conveyed to the union Home Ministry that total zero infiltration level was the key to peace in Jammu and Kashmir. This has been conveyed by the police authorities, senior functionaries of the CRPF and the IB to the Union Home Ministry officials during a recent review of the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Home Minister, RK Singh, according to official sources, was told that in case the Army and the BSF, guarding the LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir, were successful in foiling each and every ingress bid by militants the troubled border state can experience peace during 2012. Senior police and CRPF functionaries are said to have conveyed to Singh that once groups of militants managed to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir they could kick up subversive violence on a new scale. The Home Ministry was informed that Kashmir witnessed a peaceful summer last year only because the troops had succeeded in foiling over 80 per cent infiltration bids by militants. Singh was told that even if some three to five militants crossed into Jammu and Kashmir per month during the last year they could not do anything after they found more than 40 top terrorists have been eliminated by the security forces during anti-insurgency operations. It was suggested to the Defence Ministry and the top brass in the Army be approached for upgrading the anti-infiltration mechanism on the entire LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir. Asked what steps could be taken to strengthen counter infiltration measures senior police officers said that first of all additional companies of troops be deployed on the LoC and the IB so that unmanned border strips could be plugged. Secondly, the border fence has been damaged owing to sow in various border belts in the state and immediate steps should be taken after a coupe of months for repairing the fence. Thirdly, additional gadgets be installed on the border which could help the troops to monitor the movement of militants. |
