Lance Naik Sanjay awarded gallantry medal posthumously | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 15: As the announcer started reading out the citation in the name of gallantry award winner Lance Naik Sanjay Kumar, belt no 13762268, there was pin drop silence in the Sangha Auditorium, venue of the investiture ceremony of the Northern command on Sunday. Neelam Kumari, wife of the gallant soldier, with almost no emotion on her face started her march to collect the honour from the GOC-in-C Lt Gen KT Parnaik. As she approached the dais, the announcer completed the narrative of the last gun fight Lance Naik Sanjay Kumar fought before sacrificing his life in the line of duty. On the dais as Neelam Kumari folded her hands to acknowledge the gesture of the army commander the entire hall too acknowledged the valour of the brave soldier. It was on July 20, 2010 when Lance Naik Sanjay Kumar was participating in the search and cordon operation in Baramulla area of Kashmir a group of terrorists attacked the soldiers after taking shelter behind a group of women. Lance Naik Sanjay despite taking bullet hits on both his thighs went on to give tough fight to the militants and despite his grave injuries managed to kill one of the terrorists. Later he succumbed to his serious injuries and attained martyrdom. Along with Lance Naik Sanjay Kumar, 70 other gallant officers were awarded by the army commander during the Investiture ceremony. |
