Jammu-Kishtwar NH continues to remain closed | Shortage of essential commodities hits Doda-Kishtwar | | Asif iqbal naik
KISHTWAR, Jan 15: Despite lapse of over 9 days since Kishtwar and Doda Districts of Chenab valley received a heavy snowfall, 230 KM long Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway continued to play spoil sport for the passengers as the authorities fails to re-establish the connectivity despite Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's assurance to restore the same a week ago during his visit to twin districts. The Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway becomes the cause of the concern for the passengers, particularly the students who are compelled to reach the Jammu to sit for various examinations. "We started our journey in a private sumo yesterday morning at around 9 AM, but managed to reach Jammu only by 3 PM today." said Asif Zarger, a student from Kishtwar. Asif said that normally every Sumo reach Jammu from Kishtwar in 6 hours, but it took them 18 hours to reach Jammu. He said that the road from Kishtwar to Batote is in bad condition. He said that though the road onwards to Batote for Jammu is in good condition with a bit slippery patches in between, but said that the traffic mismanagement is the major concern then the condition of road. Several other students from Kishtwar who were still trapped in between Batote and Jammu have the same opinion. Meanwhile, due to continuous blockade of Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway, Doda and Kishtwar districts were facing the shortage of essential commodities like LPG, Kerosene Oil, Vegetables, Milk, mutton and medicines. During the past 9 days when heavy snowfall has been witnessed in both the districts, hardly few vehicles manage to reach Kishtwar and Doda District as a result of which the essential commodities fail to reach in the market thus adds to the worries of common man who had left with no option but to purchase the items of daily use on higher rates since the black marketing is at its peak while District Administration is sleeping over the matter. The people are running halter and shelter for the want of Kerosene Oil, LPG, Petrol, firewood, etc. Keeping in view of the growing resentment among the people over the shortage of essential commodities, Kishtwar police took the control of LPG sale in Kishtwar District yesterday as a result of which large numbers of people were seen standing in queue to avail LPG cylinder. According to the officials of CAPD, keeping in view of the heavy rush of the costumers, the police took the control of two LPG vehicles that reached Kishtwar after week's time after being trapped on National Highway. They said that both the trucks were loaded with 538 LPG cylinders which is far less as compared with the growing demands. One of the consumers Iqhlak Ahmed Dev said that due to heavy snowfall last week, there is acute shortage of LPG, Kerosene and firewood in Kishtwar District. " We have no LPG, no Kerosene and no firewood at home, beside there is forecast of heavy snowfall in coming days as well-what will we people do then?" said Dev. He said that both Doda and Kishtwar District witnessed road blockade for so many days ever year. He said that people either by hook or crook want to reserve the stock of LPG, Kerosene Oil and other items. He said that there is an urgent need of opening of more LPG outlet at Kishtwar and Doda so that people get respite from situation witnessed by the people of Chenab valley these days. He said that government must ensure complete restoration of traffic on Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway so that essential commodities could be transported. Another person Zakir Hussain said that he was waiting for his term since last three hours and accuses that the cylinders were distributed among the influential people. He said that he had no other option for cooking at home other than LP
