| Pranab informs Azad about concrete decisions taken during his visit to Pakistan | | Azad compliments sincerity and will of India and Pakistan for strengthening friendship and peace | | Jammu Jan 15 Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad had one-hour long meeting with Minister for External Affairs Mr. Pranab Mukherjee at New Delhi after his successful visit to Pakistan. Mr. Mukherjee informed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister the outcome of his series of meetings with Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Showkat Aziz and Foreign Minister Mr. Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri. Chief Minister expressed his full satisfaction over the success of talks and the sincerity and will of both the countries to march towards peace and strengthen the friendship. He said the sincerity and will is evident from the fact that both the countries are determined to discuss and sort out all outstanding issues between two countries. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee informed Chief Minister that both the countries have agreed to conduct joint survey of Sir Creek beginning from today. Mr. Mukherjee informed Chief Minister about various concrete decisions taken during his visit to Islamabad. He informed him that the Joint Commission which was signed and agreed upon between the two countries during Mrs. Indira Gandhi’s Prime Ministership in 1983 could meet only twice so far during last 24 years. One meeting was held in 1983 and another in 1994. These two meetings were held when Congress was in power at the centre. The Foreign Minister stressed at Islamabad for holding another meeting between the two countries to discuss commerce, trade, transit and other economic related issues. Mr. Mukherjee informed Mr. Azad that Pakistan government has accepted the invitation to attend these meetings in the month of February. Chief Minister expressed his happiness on this development as economic, trade, commerce and transit will play vital role in ushering both the countries towards economic prosperity. Mr. Mukherjee informed Chief Minister that both the countries have decided to expedite the liberalization of visa regime and have agreed to complete this liberalization process by the end of February. Chief Minister was informed that both the countries have agreed to establish committee comprising of retired judges of superior judiciary on prisoners. It was decided that the committee shall visit jails of both countries and propose steps to ensure humane treatment and expeditious release of prisoners who have completed prison terms. Mr. Mukherjee also informed Chief Minister that both countries agreed upon to take up in the month of February during Pakistan Foreign Minister’s visit to New Delhi the matter for agreement on reducing risks from nuclear related accidents. During the same visit, agreements relating to speedy return of inadvertent line-crossers and prevention of incidents at sea will also be taken up. Chief Minister was also informed that both countries have agreed to hold first meeting of joint anti-terror mechanism before end of March 2007. This mechanism was agreed between Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and General Pervez Musharraf in Havana last year. However, at that time no date and time was fixed for its meeting. Chief Minister expressed his satisfaction that by holding this meeting in the month of March, the issue will be sorted out accordingly. The most important outcome of Mr. Mukherjee’s successful visit to Pakistan was fixing the date for fourth round of composite dialogue between India and Pakistan which will be held on 13th and 14th March, 2007. Mr. Azad was also informed that SAARC summit will be held in New Delhi from 2nd to 4th April for which Prime Minister of Pakistan has been invited accordingly. |
