| Unsuccessful grenade attack on Mirwaiz's residence | | |
Srinagar, Jan 15 Unidentified persons today carried out an unsuccessful grenade attack at the residence here of Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq who was not present and no one was hurt. The grenade was lobbed towards Mirwaiz Manzil at Nigeen at around 12 noon but landed about 20 metres away from a security bunker guarding the house, official sources said. Many family members of the moderate Hurriyat faction Chairman were present in the house but no one was injured. Security guards fired several rounds in air as a precautionary measure. Officials said the attackers used a rifle grenade. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Mirwaiz, who is in Jammu on his way to Pakistan leading a three-member Hurriyat delegation, said he would not be cowed down by such attacks and would continue his efforts for a solution to the Kashmir problem. "We know who the people are behind these things and I will make it absolutely clear that Hurriyat is not going to be cowed down by these efforts," he said in an apparent reference to the hardline Hurriyat faction led by Syed Ali Geelani. "We will continue with all our mights to resist these people and work for a solution to the Kashmir issue," he said. Condemning the attack, the Hurriyat faction led by him said, "People know well who the murderers are and those who are taking undue advantage of militancy to maintain an upper hand would be soon exposed." "The days of negative politics have been counted and it is evident that defeated elements can carry out cowardly attacks in frustration," a spokesman of the faction said in a statement here. Geelani condemned the attack and said dragging his faction's name into the attack was an attempt to get "some petty political mileage". "We do not belive in mischevious politics. We percieve the ongoing dialogue process for resolution of the Kashmir issue as playing with the sacrifices of the people and will oppose it at all levels." The Mirwaiz-led faction has been at loggerheads with Geelani, who enjoys the support of radical separatist and militant outfits operating in the valley. Geelani has called for a general strike on Wednesday against the proposed visit of the moderates to Pakistan. Khawateen Kashmir, a constituent of the moderate Hurriyat, said such atacks are not acceptable. |
