Hundreds of tourists and other passengers, also remained stranded in Srinagar, Jammu and other places on the highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country. The highway remained closed completely for the second day today due to heavy snowfall and slippery road conditions, official sources said. They said two to four feet of fresh snowfall was recorded at Qazigund, Banihal, Jawahar tunnel and Shantan nallah. They said several thousand trucks, loaded with essentials besides oil and LPG tankers were stranded at Jammu, Udhampur, Batote and other places on other side of the tunnel. Hundreds of Srinagar-bound tourists and other passengers were also stranded at Jammu and other places. Similarly, hundreds of trucks loaded with fruits and empty oil and LPG tankers were stranded in Srinagar, Qazigund, Anant-nag and other places on this side of the tunnel. They said hundreds of tourists and locals are also stranded in Srinagar because of the closure of the highway and cancellation of all flights from here. The highway was closed on January 7 due to snowfall and slippery road conditions. However, after the Border Roads Organi-sation (BRO), responsible for the maitainance of the highway, the road was put through for one-way after three days. Due to traffic jams and stranded vehicles, the authorities allowed only one-way traffic for two days. However, the authorities again did not allowe any traffic from Jammu and Srinagar to clear the hundreds of stranded vehicles, including those carrying passengers at different places. However, before fresh traffic was allowed on the highway, snowfall started from the evening of January 14, forcing authorities to again suspend traffic. A report from Baramulla said hundreds of villages remained cut off from the district and tehsil headquarters for the past two days due to heavy snowfall. Sadhna and Razdan passes, connecting far-flung and remote areas, particularly near the Line of Control (LoC) remained closed due to heavy snowfall. Though the authorities have pressed into service snow clearance machine, but roads remained closed due to slippery conditions. Remote and far-flung villages in south Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Pul-wama, central Kashmir Badgam and Ganderbal also remained cut off with their respective headquaters following snowfall |
