LPG rationing after CAPD minister said 'sufficient stocks | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Jan 16: Despite claims by CAPD minister Qamar Ali Akhoon and officials of the department that sufficient stocks of LPG are available in the Valley a serious LPG availability crisis has resulted in serious hardships to the people. When the Kashmir University authorities closed down the University's hostels because of non-availability of LPG to run the kitchens of the University hostels those have to cater to more than one thousand students, state CAPD minister Qamar Ali Akhoon went public criticizing the University authorities for closing the hostels for non-availability of LPG cylinders. "They should have called me or the officials of the CAPD and the LPG cylinders would have been delivered at the University hostels", Qamar Ali said when asked about the scarcity of LPG in Srinagar city which had compelled the University authorities to postpone all the exams to be held within the University campus up to 26th January and close down its hostels. Just a day after the minister made the statement, the divisional administration in Srinagar issued a instructions to the gas companies to supply LPG cylinders filled with just 5 Kgs of gas to their consumers till the Jammu-Srinagar road is reopened and the LPG supply position improves. This time the LPG cylinders filled with just 5 Kgs of gas are supplied to consumers waiting in long queues and the same is now being regulated by the local police. Long queues of consumers waiting for their turn of the less than half filled LPG cylinders are seen outside the various police stations in the city. The crisis is even more acute in other district headquarters and rural areas of the Valley. Many people have told electronic news channels that they have been using electric heaters to cook food during the last four days because of the non-availability of LPG filled cylinders in their areas. The use of electricity for cooking is putting extra load on the transformers with every likelihood of these tripping down due to the avoidable overloading in areas where people use electric heaters for cooking purposes. Besides, it is understandable that all those who use the electricity for cooking purposes are doing so illegally. It is a situation where the CAPD minister hides reality and the people tell the truth mindless of the possibility that they can be penalized for their truthfulness. The minister concerned has yet to accept whether he had willingly misinformed the media or had been misinformed by the officials of the CAPD? |
